EAST LANSING- Michigan State wrestling is set to take on Purdue in West Lafayette, Indiana, on Friday, Jan. 23.
The dual will make the third Big Ten match-up in the Spartans’ conference stretch, and the team aims to snap a three-dual losing streak.
Michigan State is 3-4 overall heading into Friday’s dual, not having won since Dec. 7 at The Citadel. Purdue heads into their Big Ten home opener 8-3 with one conference victory.
Wrestlers to watch for Michigan State will be Caleb Wieand, Kael Wisler, and Max Vanadia. Wieand is ranked 30th at 133 pounds and is 0-4 in dual action. Max Vanadia is ranked No. 26 for 285 pounds and is currently undefeated at 5-0 for the season.
The Spartans No. 27-ranked Kael Wisler will face down Purdue’s No. 17-ranked Ben Vanadia in the key match-up of the dual. Wisler is 5-2 in duals and Vanadia is 9-2. Ben Vanadia is the older brother of Michigan State’s Vanadia twins, Max and Luke.
Other wrestlers to watch for Purdue will be Stoney Buell, Joey Blaze, and Brody Baumann. Stoney Buell is ranked 21st at 157 pounds and is 4-3 in duals. Joey Blaze, Purdue’s highest ranked wrestler, comes in at 4th at 165 pounds and is currently undefeated 8-0 in dual action. Blaze has been ranked 4th in the NCAA since Nov. 17. Brody Baumann is ranked 20th for the 174-pound weight class and is 8-2.
Both Michigan State and Purdue look to secure a win following a conference loss tomorrow night, Jan. 23, at 5 p.m. in Holloway Gymnasium.
