EAST LANSING— No. 11 Michigan State women’s gymnastics will be traveling to No. 14 Penn State this upcoming Sunday afternoon. The Spartans are pumped up after a victory against their in-state rival, No. 8 Michigan, last Sunday. MSU won 197.525 to 197.425, earning season highs on every event. The Spartans are currently 2-4 overall and 1-2 in the Big Ten.
Current standout gymnasts for the Spartans are seniors Sage Kellerman, Nikki Smith, Olivia Zsarmani, and junior, MaKayla Tucker.
Kellerman is currently leading the team in vault with 9.9750 and bars with 9.9250. She just earned Big Ten Specialist of the Week honors on Tuesday afternoon. This is the first of her season, but seventh of her career.
Smith leads the team in beam with 9.9250 and floor with 9.9500. She just received her season high on floor and bars (9.850) in the match against Michigan last Sunday. Zsarmani also got three season highs on bars, vault and beam, where she earned her first event title of her career. Junior MaKayla Tucker secured the all-around title, with a 39.500, the first of her career. Among all her scores, she earned a season-high on beam with a 9.900.
Penn State is undefeated this season, with a record of 4-0, and 3-0 in Big Ten after a victory against the Rutgers, 196.375-194.575 last Sunday. Senior Ava Piedrahita won the event title for vault with a season-high score of 9.925. Sophomore Dani Latronica, who is ranked No. 15 in the country and No. 5 in the Big Ten for her uneven bar’s routine, took the event title for bars with a score of 9.925. Junior, Ashley Maul earned her first event title of the season on beam with a score of 9.875. Sophomore, Elizabeth Leary and junior, Kalea McElligott both scored a 9.850 on floor, sharing the event title. Leary won the all-around title with a total score of 39.050.
The Spartans are looking for another conference win, while the Nittany Lions are looking to stay undefeated this weekend. Penn State has not beaten Michigan State since 2020. The meet will take place inside the Rec Hall at Penn State on Sunday at 2 p.m. and can be streamed on Big Ten Plus.
