Annual Earth Bash showcases sustainability and education
In preparation for Earth Day this Wednesday, the MSU Surplus Store and Recycling Center held its annual Earth Month event, Earth Bash, from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 18, on site. The open house event hosted 15 partners, featuring various events, 6 activities, and sustainability education. Tours of the recycling center show how waste from the school is managed as a resource. At all the booths in the center, students and community members could make crafts, learn, and get new clothes, books, and more. Partners like Karma Cloth and the Sewing and Embroidery Club or Yarn Circle, used crafts to demonstrate how to help reduce waste. Old t-shirts and plastic bags were the spotlight of Yarn Circle’s booth. They taught attendees to make yarn out of the supplies and use it for crochet or knitting.
Trustees Scott, Tebay, and Zemke net Democratic nomination for MSU board
Michigan State University trustees Brianna Scott and Kelly Tebay Zemke will once again be the Democratic candidates for the university’s board of trustees, fending off a challenge by state Sen. Sylvia Santana, D-Detroit, to earn the state party’s nomination Sunday in Detroit. “I will continue to work to make sure that Michigan State remains affordable for our in-state students,” Scott said in her victory speech at 9:30 p.m. “I promise you, I will continue to do what has always been in the best interests of Michigan State University.” The board of trustees is composed of eight members who serve for staggered eight-year terms, with two seats up for grabs in November. Scott and Tebay Zemke, the longest-serving trustees on the board, both took office in January 2019. As members of the university’s governing body, they have overseen prolonged periods of strife at MSU and episodes of infighting on the board, including the aftermath of the Larry Nassar scandal and the years-long saga that ensued after Scott’s 2023 bombshell accusation that the then-board chair was engaging in widespread misconduct.
Munn hosts 24-hour hockey game for cancer fundraiser
The stench of sweat and ice filled Munn Ice Arena at 1 a.m. on Sunday. The crowd was seven people, including some asleep. Munn Ice Arena, home of the Michigan State hockey team, hosted a 24-hour hockey game beginning Saturday, April 18. The first puck dropped at 2 p.m. Saturday, and the final horn sounded at 2 p.m. Sunday. The event was a fundraiser for families affected by pediatric cancer, sponsored by LivFree, a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting the fight against pediatric cancer. Dan Vieira founded LivFree in honor of his daughter Lauren Irene Vieira, a pediatric cancer survivor. LivFree has existed for nine years, and its 24-hour hockey marathon has existed for two. The game at Munn is the first one outside Connecticut, where Vieira and LivFree are based. Over 90 people participated in the event. Some people were dressed for the occasion, in full hockey padding. Others stuck out on the ice, like hockey content creator Jacob Ardown, who sported jeans and a signature red cowboy hat.
