EAST LANSING- MSU wrestling hosts a competitive conference rival in the Iowa Hawkeyes, hoping to rack up two wins in a row. Their last dual victory came against Northwestern, picking up the win 22-20. This most recent win improved the Spartans’ record overall to 4-6 overall and 1-4 in conference play.
The Iowa Hawkeyes most recent dual resulted in a loss, with them coming up short against the No.2 Ohio State Buckeyes 24-9. The defeat dropped their record to 9-5 overall and 2-3 against conference opponents.
In this upcoming matchup, the Green and White must be cautious of 165-pound Iowa senior Michael Caliendo , who is ranked No.3 in his weight class. 174-pound Fifth year Patrick Kennedy is also ranked No.3 in his respective weight class for the Hawkeyes. Both men picked up bout wins in their dual against Ohio State along including 157-pound senior Victor Voinovich who Michigan State needs to look out for.
Though Iowa has some notable stand outs on their team and is ranked higher overall, the Spartans are not a team to take lightly. No. 23 ranked redshirt junior Kael Wisler is a 197-pound standout for Michigan State this season who picked up a win against Northwestern. 157-pound redshirt freshman Darrius Marines and heavyweight redshirt junior Josh Terrill have also picked up impressive wins against the Wildcats.
In MSU wrestling history against the Iowa Hawkeyes, its record sits at 2-13 all time. They have fallen short in the last 10 duals to the Hawkeyes with the last dual occurring on February 2, 2020. The Hawkeyes defeated the Spartans 32-3 in the competition six years ago.
Going into the dual, Michigan State aims to pick up two wins in a row and snap this all-time 10 game losing streak against the Hawkeyes. Meanwhile, the University of Iowa is looking to bounce back after suffering defeat to the Ohio State Buckeyes.
The dual will take place on Sunday, February 8 with a start time of 1 p.m. ET at Jenison Fieldhouse.
