EAST LANSING – Michigan State wrestling will compete at Jenison Field House against American University on Dec. 18.
With numerous duals already competed in by the Spartans this season, MSU will bring in this competition with the intent of continuing to improve upon its consistency, ultimately improving its overall performance as a team and its individual performance through the development of its technical skills, which will ultimately be a major factor when onset of conference competition begins.
For the Spartans, this dual provides an opportunity to be able to solidify their main area of focus, which are generating scoring opportunities from neutral positions, winning tight matches, and creating a strong top position without allowing your opponent to escape or reserve you. The coaching staff has been focused on sharper setup techniques, cleaner finishes, and remaining composed in situations of late period, as those situations will greatly impact the outcome of dual meet. Also, several weight classes are still in a highly competitive state within the program, so there is also an element of lineup implications as the wrestlers are trying to secure their respective places heading into the new year.
The Eagles will use a disciplined style of mat wrestling and take advantage of wrestling and take advantage of opportunities to score points as well as the strong conditioning they will have in the third period. If they can keep Michigan State from gaining control of the pace of the match, it could be very important in close matches when bonus points could make a difference in the final score.
Fans should look forward to seeing fantastic individual matchups all the way up and down the lineup. Redshirt sophomore Cam Adams will compete at 165 pounds and is expected to make a significant impact for the Spartans, brining his experiences and competitive drive to help secure key victories. Recently, Michigan State’s upper weights have consistently improved their points scored per match with their continued emphasis on attacking the opponent and finishing the scoring. At the same time, both their light and middleweight classes are placing a heavy focus on converting attacks into points more efficiently. Additionally, this dual will provide meaningful mat experience to the younger Spartans, which will be beneficial to the team’s overall development while creating additional excitement and concern for the competitor during each match where they have a chance to entertain their home crowd.
Michigan State looks to wrap up the calendar year with a strong showing as a complete team. The match against American presents an ideal test for the Spartans to illustrate their development as a program and solidify their team identity and gain momentum leading into a grueling schedule that awaits them the rest of the season.
