EAST LANSING – After a two-game road trip the No. 16 Michigan State women’s soccer team returns home to take on No. 21 Ohio State. MSU is vying to win against two top 25 teams in a row, after beating No. 20 Wisconsin handily 6-0.
In the last meeting between the Spartans and the Buckeyes, the game ended in a 2-2 draw. Recent history between these two sides favors Michigan State, as the Spartans are unbeaten with a 2-0-2 record against Ohio State.
The Buckeyes are coming off of a comfortable 3-0 win over Illinois. Before that win Ohio State started conference play off with four straight 0-0 draws.
If MSU wants to expand on its three-game win streak they will need some help from senior midfielder Emerson Sargeant. Sargeant was just named the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week.
After getting her first goal of the year against Minnesota, Sargeant continued firing on all cylinders against Wisconsin, netting two goals. She will play a vital role for Michigan State on Sunday.
Freshman goalkeeper Noelle Henning will be another player to look out for on the Spartan’s side of the ball. Henning just earned the Big Ten freshman of the week award after completing her third career shutout against Wisconsin and making five saves against Minnesota. This was Henning’s first weekly honor in the Big Ten and she’ll look to keep the confidence she has right now.
Ohio State, junior defender Ava Bramblett will be the main player MSU has to keep an eye on. Bramblett scored two goals in her most recent outing against Illinois and was a big reason for why the Buckeyes won that game. Bramblett is a player who can play all over the field and has a chance to cause havoc against Michigan State.
Both of these squads are hoping to remain undefeated in conference play and keep their current win streaks alive.
The Green and White look to expand their winning streak to four straight and Ohio State hopes to get their first win over the Spartans since 2020. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 5th at DeMartin Stadium, airing on the Big Ten Network.
