Jordan Scott to see “double” minutes ahead of Wisconsin
Before last week, Michigan State Men’s Basketball’s rotation was in a groove with little change. But after guard Divine Ugochukwu suffered a season-ending foot injury, head coach Tom Izzo had a few lineup decisions to make. Yesterday, Izzo said he’s confident in his true freshman going forward, with increased minutes at the guard position. “He was playing 17, 18 minutes a game. Now he’s up into the mid-20s. I think he’s been something good,” Izzo said. “Especially with the fact that Divine [Ugochukwu] is out for the year, it even doubles [his minutes].”Scott earned his first start before Ugochukwu was injured against Minnesota, scoring a career-high 15 points with two rebounds and two assists. In the following game at home against No. 5 Illinois, he scored 10 points and served as a vital enforcer, crashing the glass for rebounds and finding himself open in the corner for a three. Scott saw 29 and 28 minutes on the floor in his two starts, 10 minutes more than both guard Kur Teng and Scott’s freshman counterpart, Cam Ward.
For MSU fundraising consultant, ties to VP pay off
As 80s mega-star Madonna performed hit after hit in front of a packed crowd at Little Caesar’s Arena in January 2024, a small envoy from Michigan State University took in the show. Kim Tobin, who leads the MSU department tasked with courting donors, University Advancement, was joined by Matthew Helmer, an outside consultant who regularly works with the department. The concert kicked off a three-day trip in Detroit. Also on the trip were Associate Vice President Simone Clasen and Alexis Kanda Olmstead, who directs fundraising at Dartmouth College, according to an expense report shared by a former advancement staffer with The State News, though it’s unclear if either attended the concert. Despite their varied jobs, the four had one thing in common: a career closely interwoven with Tobin’s. Each had worked with the vice president at her previous stop at Colorado State University, where she similarly led the institution’s advancement office. The concert and trip at large typifies the close relationship between department executives and shines a light on the proximity to leadership enjoyed by Helmer — whom staffers consider one of the more enigmatic figures in advancement. It’s impressive access for Helmer, who isn’t technically an employee of the university, and a symbol of the increasing presence of the firm he belongs to in the advancement office. The university paid the firm, Donor Relations Group, $297,822 in 2025, according to invoices obtained through a public records request. That’s a dramatic increase from the $63,667 MSU paid the firm during the firm’s first half-year working for the department, starting in May 2022.
MSU’s Super Smash star Dyson Mingo shares his experience as a top-ranked player
MSU environmental science senior Dyson Mingo is a typical college student in many ways. He hangs out with his friends, goes to the gym a few times a week, completes internships, and will be graduating in the spring. But there is something unique that sets Mingo apart from his peers: He is a top-ranked Super Smash Bros. Ultimate player under the alias “Dice,” and a captain on the MSU varsity esports team. Super Smash Bros is one of Nintendo’s most popular franchises and a pillar in the competitive gaming and esports communities. In the game, players can choose from 89 fighters from some of gaming’s most popular franchises, each with their own unique abilities and playstyles. Players battle it out on platform-like stages, fighting to knock each other out of bounds to win. In games like this, many pros choose one character to master and stick with it. Mingo is known for playing Falco, a main character from the video game series Star Fox. In Smash Bros, Falco is known for his fast playstyle, utilizing combos and speed to dominate opponents. Mingo is so good at Falco that he was named the #1 Falco player in North America in October of 2025.
