Coalition of student organizations organizes walkout against ICE and DHS
On Jan. 29, over 1,000 MSU students walked out of their classes and gathered at the Hannah Administration building, despite the 10-degree temperature and brutal wind. The crowd voiced its contempt regarding the recent controversial actions taken by ICE and DHS in Minneapolis. The protest was a collective effort organized by 16 student organizations, including Culturas de las Razas Unidas and the College Democrats at MSU. The Students Against ICE walkout was held just 5 days after the death of Alex Pretti, the second U.S. citizen shot and killed by ICE this year, following Renée Good’s death on Jan. 7. Spartans aimed to demonstrate student opposition and push for a call to action, according to the official statement from Students Against ICE.

Carl Craig selected for MSUFCU Arts Power Up Artist-in-Residence program
From mid-January to April, world-renowned Detroit DJ, producer and techno innovator Carl Craig will participate in the Michigan State University Federal Credit Union (MSUFCU) Arts Power Up Artist-in-Residence program. Hosted by the MSU Museum’s CoLab Studio, in collaboration with the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB) and sponsored by MSUFCU, the program aims to connect artists, researchers and students together. Director of MSU Museum Devon Akmon said the program focuses on “bridging the arts and the sciences.” “The MSUFCU Arts Power Up Residency is really about bringing together disciplines to explore new ideas and new ways of working together — thinking about bridging the arts and the sciences, and really in different ways,” Akmon said. “This isn’t also just about the culmination of a wonderful work of art at the end, although, of course, that’s what happens. It’s really about challenging our academic community to come together and explore things in new ways.”
MSU grinds out overtime win facing No. 5 Illinois
Michigan State Basketball rebounded from two losses in the best way they could: with a grind-it-out team win. No. 5 Illinois tied MSU in the final seconds to go to overtime, but in the extra period, Jeremy Fears Jr. simply took over, made tough shots and hit all of the necessary free throws late in the fight for MSU to win 85-82. Fears was nearly unstoppable in the last five minutes of regulation and overtime, showing he can be the player MSU needs him to be without the extra contact or antics. He finished with a game-leading 26 points and 15 assists. With just over 30 seconds left, Fears brought the ball up the court and found Kur Teng in the corner for an open 3-pointer. He missed, but Jaxon Kohler grabbed the most important rebound of the night and found Teng for another shot — one he didn’t miss — giving them the lead with 8 seconds remaining. Illinois later hit two free throws to force overtime. After the game, head coach Tom Izzo said, “Everyone did something.”
MSU now has a six-day break before facing Wisconsin in Madison on Feb. 13 at 8:00 p.m.
