MSU hockey’s Charlie Stramel earns Big Ten First Star of the Week
Michigan State hockey senior center Charlie Stramel was named the Big Ten First Star of the Week, the conference announced this morning. The honor follows No. 2 Michigan State’s sweep of then-No. 5 Penn State last weekend.Stramel scored the game-winning goal in the Spartans’ 5-4 overtime win to clinch the series sweep. He also scored a buzzer-beater goal to tie the game before entering the third period. He finished the weekend with five points (three goals, two assists) and leads the team with 35 points (16 goals, 19 assists). It marks the most points he has recorded in a season as he surpassed his previous career high on Jan. 16. Prior to reaching that mark, Stramel said his confidence has grown significantly this season.
MSU board to vote on IM West demolition after yearlong delay
Michigan State University’s Board of Trustees will vote Friday on whether to proceed with the demolition of IM West after more than a year of delay. Trustees will also vote on renovations to Wilson Hall, the appointment of a new vice president for research and innovation and the university’s external auditors for the 2025–26 fiscal year. The plan to demolish Intramural Recreational Sports West, commonly known as IM West, was initially proposed in November 2024, where it was listed under potential demolition in MSU’s design guidelines for the campus. Following this, the board was set to vote on whether to demolish the facility in February 2025, ultimately delaying the decision to its June meeting where a planning study was unanimously approved which would determine the future of IM West. The study examined whether the building should be renovated or demolished.
MSU wrestling earns first Big Ten win against Northwestern
Michigan State wrestling returned home to Jenison Field House, taking down Northwestern to get their first Big Ten win of the season. They snapped a 5-game losing streak, 4 of which came from conference play, in front of their home crowd in dramatic fashion with a 22-20 win. The Spartans got their 29th win in the all-time series match-up against Northwestern, their first since 2019, breaking a 3-match losing drought to the Wildcats. MSU held off a late charge back in the last three matches to narrowly escape with a win and improve to 4-6 on the season.
Three takeaways from MSU women’s basketball’s nail-biting loss to Michigan
EAST LANSING— No. 13 Michigan State women’s basketball was defeated by rival No. 9 Michigan Sunday in an overtime thriller. After sophomore center Ines Sotelo’s half-court heave spun out of the rim, five more minutes were needed, and the Wolverines would prevail 94-91. In a game that never saw either team lead by double digits, there were plenty of opportunities for both teams to win this game, but it was Michigan who would make the final key plays. Here are three takeaways from the afternoon bout. Excellent performances on both sides, Both teams had multiple players erupting for over 20 points. For the Spartans, sophomore guard Kennedy Blair and junior guard Jalyn Brown dropped 21 apiece. Efficient shot-making from both teams, This game saw a lot of scoring, and both teams shot well from the field. Michigan shot 57% from the field and 41% from deep, while the Spartans shot 51% overall and 46% from three.Packed house and what this means for women’s basketball, MSU head coach Robyn Fralick challenged fans to show up, and they certainly did. The Breslin Center was packed, with over 11,000 fans in attendance.
