Judge dismisses Brenda Tracy’s lawsuit against Mel Tucker
An Ingham County judge dismissed Brenda Tracy’s lawsuit against former Michigan State University head football coach Mel Tucker. At a hearing in Lansing Wednesday afternoon, Judge Wanda Stokes dismissed the nine-count lawsuit, finding that Tracy’s claims weren’t applicable due to the statutes of limitation or that there were no factual issues for a potential jury to consider, the Lansing State Journal reported Wednesday. “Justice delayed is often justice denied, but it doesn’t mean you can’t get vindicated,” one of Tucker’s attorneys, Andrew Abood, told The State News Wednesday evening. Tracy, a rape survivor and advocate who was sexually harassed by Tucker, filed the suit in October 2024. She claimed that Tucker had attempted to ruin her reputation by claiming that she was extorting Tucker and MSU for money, and claiming that their relationship had been consensual. Tracy’s attorney, Karen Truszkowski, wrote in an email to The State News that she “will likely appeal” the ruling.
MSU Jazz Studies wins big at national competition
Michigan State University’s Jazz Studies program finished second at the 2026 National Collegiate Jazz Championship in New York City earlier this month, its fourth appearance and top-three placement at the competition. Along with netting a $7,500 prize for the Jazz Studies program, 20 students received individual honors across a dozen categories, including physics junior Kevin Eisenberg, who was recognized for Outstanding Piano for his solo in the orchestra’s performance of “Two-Three’s Adventure.” Eisenberg, whose performance was his first at a jazz competition, said the recognition marked a “kind of full circle moment” since he first heard about the university’s Jazz Studies program when it won first place at the 2022 National Collegiate Jazz Championship, formerly known as the Jack Rudin Jazz Championship.”When I heard them play, I said I was going to MSU to play in the band and bring them a first place,” Eisenberg said in an interview. “A dream in the making.”
Looking at MSU vs. Michigan by the numbers
No. 3 Michigan vs. No. 7 Michigan State: an intense rivalry that proves its impact, no matter the sport. There are several ways to break down this storied rivalry, highlighted by memorable moments such as Trey Burke’s game-winning steal in 2013 and MSU’s 2024 victory that lifted head coach Tom Izzo to his 700th career win. The winner of Friday’s game will claim sole possession of first place in the Big Ten following three Purdue losses and UM’s win over Nebraska. UM (19-1, 9-1) and MSU (19-2, 9-1) will tip off Friday, Jan. 30, at 8 p.m. on FOX, with Gus Johnson and Bill Raftery on the call. Izzo, after practice on Wednesday, said he always looks forward to these games, especially when both teams are as good as they are. “Rivalries are always rivalries, but rivalries when both teams are good are more important rivalries and bigger rivalries,” Izzo said. “So it’s not always been that way, it is that way this year, and that’s great.”
