Students gather in downtown Lansing to oppose data center
Roughly 75 students and community members packed into an expo-style open house in a large conference room at the Lansing Center on Saturday morning to ask questions and express concerns over a proposed data center. Data centers have been the subject of many recent protests in Michigan, including a large rally at the state capitol in mid-December and one in Saline over DTE’s contracted OpenAI development. According to Deep Green spokespeople from the event, the development will serve as a leasing space for companies to charter servers for storing large amounts of data. Lansing Board of Water and Light (LBWL) would provide power to the 24-megawatt data center, and in return, it would provide carbon-neutral heat for LBWL’s hot water system. Hosted by Lansing City Council members and the UK-based company Deep Green, the event had various tables and posters set up from organizations related to the center’s development along with an open bar of coffee and muffins next to advertisements for the project. Many of those in attendance were students affiliated with Sunrise Movement Michigan State University, which had encouraged students via Instagram on Wednesday to gather and oppose the project.
MSU basketball prepares for Rutgers days ahead of rivalry match
In the middle of a 6-0 stretch, Michigan State is riding high on stellar point-guard play and the nation’s top defense. Tomorrow, No. 7 MSU will head to Rutgers for its final game before the Spartans host No. 3 Michigan on Friday. Tuesday’s contest will tip off at 6:30 p.m. and will be broadcast on Fox Sports One. Rutgers (9-1, 2-7) compares closely to the Maryland squad that was dismantled by the Spartans last week. The Scarlet Knights are 0-7 against Quad 1 opponents and 1-4 in Quad 2. In both of their Big Ten wins — against Oregon and Northwestern — they went to overtime and won by a combined five points. Rutgers ranks last among Big Ten teams in both the NET Rankings and KenPom’s adjusted efficiency margin. The Spartans haven’t played at Rutgers in four years and lost their previous two games at Jersey Mike’s Arena. MSU won’t be facing its toughest opponent of the year in Rutgers, but head coach Tom Izzo still wants his players to be prepared for anything.
Lansing hosts annual Olive Burger Week
From Jan. 23-31, Lansing’s annual Olive Burger Week will take place in various participating local restaurants. Dubbed as the Olive Burger Capital of the World, Lansing restaurants will celebrate by providing customers with their own unique takes on the classic olive burger. Co-hosted by Lansing Foodies and Lansing 5:01, Olive Burger Week will feature a variety of local restaurants. Event coordinator for Lansing Foodies Erin Brains said hosting this celebration is important for local businesses. The olive burger that Lansing locals are familiar with originated in Weston’s Kewpee Sandwich Shop. During the 1920s, Gladys and William Weston first opened the shop in Lansing. The olive burger was Gladys Weston’s creation, consisting of an olive sauce that has remained unchanged since it was first introduced. Current owner and operator of Weston’s Kewpee Sandwich Shop Autumn Weston said being a part of Lansing’s history is “an honor.”
