Illinois wrestling defeats MSU at Jenison Fieldhouse, 31-12
Michigan State wrestling returned home to Jenison Fieldhouse after a blowout loss to rival Michigan, but fell again, this time to No. 11 Illinois, 31-12, in a Big Ten dual that extended the Spartans’ losing streak to three matches. Despite the loss, MSU had several bright spots, as three wrestlers earned victories against a strong Illinois lineup. After dropping the 125-pound bout, MSU fell into an early 3-0 deficit. The next match was the one many had circled entering the dual: a 133-pound showdown between MSU redshirt sophomore Caleb Weiand, ranked No. 31, and Illinois graduate student Lucas Byrd, ranked No. 1. Byrd is the defending Big Ten and NCAA champion at 133 pounds, becoming just the 21st Illinois wrestler to win a national title last season. He is also a three-time All-American, making it no surprise that he enters ranked No. 1. But Weiand entered the match on a strong run, posting a 4-2 record since moving up to the 133-pound weight class, making it a matchup that drew significant attention. Weiand held his own in the opening period, but that success didn’t last long. Byrd took control in the final two periods, showing why he is among the nation’s best, and secured an 8-1 decision that gave Illinois a 6-0 lead through the opening two matches. MSU is now gearing up for an Indiana road trip, taking on Purdue Friday, Jan. 23, and Indiana on Sunday, Jan. 25
REVIEW: “Don’t Be Dumb,” but don’t be too sensible either
How do you cater to an audience that only knows a version of your art from a decade ago? A$AP Rocky’s fourth album, Don’t Be Dumb, was released on Jan. 16, nearly eight years after his last album. The comeback was highly anticipated, but the result was… well, the answer is complicated. For sure, the album contains multitudes. It is far from plain, but I would argue that it’s not entirely cohesive because of how un-plain it is. The shift between sounds is so contrasted and, at times, so jarring that it takes you by surprise. Once you think you’ve developed an opinion on the album, it’ll get rewritten quite quickly. Don’t Be Dumb represents evolution under the restraint of expectation. A$AP Rocky did not need to prove anything with this album. He is and has been one of the most respected names in the industry for the last 15 or so years. While I’d be hesitant to call this a magnum opus, it is composed and strung together smartly and creatively. It keeps the listener on their toes and engaged with its back-and-forth identity, but it can also feel like it’s not trying very hard at times. Thankfully, though, the highs are very high, and the lows are only slight dips. It is varied, but it keeps a clear theme and a central message. Guess what that may be.
