MSU hosts inaugural Beaumont Tower holiday lighting ceremony
The tower was illuminated with holiday lights Monday evening, marking the beginning of what President Kevin Guskiewicz hopes will become a lasting MSU tradition.
Students, scholarship recipients, staff members, and members of Guskiewicz’s student advisory committee gathered at the tower to celebrate the end of the fall semester and the start of the holiday season. Despite freezing weather, attendees sipped hot cocoa as the president pushed a button to light up the tower against the night sky. “Beaumont Tower is the heart of our campus and this magical place here at Michigan State, and we thought it would be fun to celebrate the end of the fall semester, the beginning of the holiday season for so many and to bring us into the new year by lighting up the tower — something that we’ve never done before in a 170-year history at Michigan State, which is hard to believe,” Guskiewicz said.Last year, the president introduced another new tradition: the Beaumont Tower climb for graduating seniors. He said both the climb and the lighting ceremony represent MSU’s dual commitment to preserving long-standing customs while creating new ones that reflect a forward-looking, contemporary university.
MSU women’s tennis welcomes a trio of 2026 recruits
Michigan State women’s tennis added three future standouts to its roster last Monday, as head coach Kim Bruno announced the program has signed Ariane Lesterhuis, Fredrika Runström and Nora Syrtveit to compete beginning in the 2026–27 season. Lesterhuis, a four-star recruit from Winnetka, Illinois, attends New Trier High School and is ranked the No. 3 player in the state and No. 130 nationally. She is a two-time Illinois high school state doubles champion, capturing titles in both 2023 and 2024. Runström joins the Spartans from Höllviken, Sweden, as one of the country’s top junior players in her class. Born in 2007, she has posted strong results on both the Tennis Europe and ITF junior circuits, including a TE12 singles finalist finish and multiple TE12 and TE14 doubles finals. Syrtveit, a native of Oslo, Norway, is one of the top-ranked players in her country for her age group. Her accomplishments include multiple podium finishes at the U16 and U19 national championships, including a U19 national singles title and two U19 national doubles titles. All three signees will join the Spartan program in the fall of 2026 and are expected to compete throughout the 2026–27 season.
MSU men’s soccer welcomes new class of Spartans
Michigan State men’s soccer announced four recruits shortly after the season ended, bringing in young talent to replace several departing players. Midfielder Dominic Dono, goalkeeper Ezra Horlings, midfielder Drew Rensing, and defender Bilal Obeid have all officially signed to represent the Spartans. The Rensing name is well known around DeMartin Stadium thanks to head coach Damon Rensing, who took over in 2009, and his son Drew will follow in his footsteps by representing the Spartans on the field. Drew won’t be the only legacy player on the roster next season, though. Midfielder Colin Arce, entering his senior year at MSU, is the son of a former Spartan who played from 1998–2001 under Damon, who was an assistant coach at the time. “I chose Michigan State because growing up in the Spartan Family, it was a dream of mine,” Drew Rensing said. “There is no place I would rather be than here, competing for championships.”
