No. 7 Michigan State squanders opportunity against No. 4 Duke
EAST LANSING– Michigan State stampeded to the under-12 timeout with a 45-40 lead, after freshman Jordan Scott made back-to-back three-pointers. The Breslin Center was buzzing, but it ended up being the last time the Spartans had any momentum, as Duke climbed back in crunch time to steal a win on the road. Blue Devils freshman Cam Boozer lifted Duke with a personal 5-0 run out of the timeout, and Jon Scheyer’s battle-tested squad found a way to finish strong en route to a 66-60 win in a tough road environment. “I thought they had a great game plan to begin with, they’ve got size, they’re physical, and they did a great job protecting the paint,” Scheyer said. Spartans guard Jeremy Fears Jr. had a game-high 13 assists, but he was 0-for-10 from the field and missed crucial looks that would’ve given MSU an edge. Despite the poor shooting performance, Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo thought his lead guard had played well. “He didn’t shoot it well, but I am so proud, he was so good again, he was asking questions and suggesting things that worked,” Izzo said.
MSU receives record-breaking $401 million commitment
Michigan State University and Spartan Athletics unveiled a landmark moment Thursday, announcing a transformational $401 million gift from Greg and Dawn Williams of Acrisure. The donation, made through MSU’s “Uncommon Will, Far Better World” campaign in support of the FOR SPARTA initiative, marks one of the largest philanthropic commitments in collegiate athletics history.
MSU President Kevin M. Guskiewicz said the gift reflects extraordinary belief in the university’s direction. “We are deeply grateful for this historic commitment, which will strengthen our academic mission and support our student-athletes in meaningful, lasting ways,” he said. “This moment will have a profound impact on generations of Spartans.” This is the largest single commitment in MSU’s history and one of the biggest individual donations in college athletics. Of the total gift, $290 million will support the FOR SPARTA initiative, $100 million will go to Spartan Ventures (NIL fund) and $11 million will be directed toward university academics.
No. 3 MSU hockey responds to split series against No. 1 Michigan
Despite a crowd of maize of blue, the Spartans looked like themselves. After a shutout on home ice, No. 3 Michigan State hockey looked to split its series against No. 1 Michigan. From the drop of the puck, the Spartans were offensively determined. Despite trailing 1-0 just as the night before, MSU stuck with its game to earn a 3-1 victory in enemy territory. Under Nightingale, the Spartans have an 8-8-0 record against Michigan, continuing their practice of splitting the rivalry series. With the win, the Spartans move to 12-4-0 overall and 5-3-0 in Big Ten play. The team will have a three-week break before competing in the Great Lakes Invitational, its first contest against Ferris State on Sunday, Dec. 28. Puck drop is set for 7:00 p.m. EST.
MSU professor returns to ‘Jeopardy!’ for a second chance
In July 2025, Michigan State University’s Interim Director of Film Studies Pete Johnston competed on Jeopardy! for the first time. Now, he’s back again for another shot at first place.
Growing up in a large family, Pete Johnston has “always loved Jeopardy!” “We’ve watched it growing up as a household, my seven brothers and sisters and I, and my parents, we would all tune in and try to get the answers,” Pete Johnston said. His love for the game show eventually led him to apply to be a contestant. “…I think in 2018, 2019, was maybe the first time I took it, and I just started taking it every year, just, you know, trying to figure out if I was getting better or worse,” Pete Johnston said. Eventually, after passing three rounds of the audition earlier this year, he received an invitation to appear on the show. The 2025 Jeopardy! Second Chance Tournament will begin to air on Monday, Dec. 15, with Pete Johnston appearing as one of the contestants on Wednesday, Dec. 17.
