Michigan State football snaps losing streak, ends season with win over Maryland
DETROIT– Michigan State football had not won a single game since September, going into Saturday night at Ford Field. The Spartans had come close with some gut-wrenching results in the past month, but to no avail, with an inability to play a complete game. However, in the season finale, redshirt junior defensive back Aveon Grose, in his first start of the year, got perfectly underneath a lofted ball, locked down his first interception of the season, and ended the Spartan season on a high note. It took a total team effort as MSU took down Maryland with a 38-28 final.
Jonathan Smith fired after two seasons at MSU
The Jonathan Smith era of Michigan State football has officially come to an end. After 24 games leading the program, Smith has been fired, relieving him of his coaching duties in East Lansing, the athletic department confirmed Sunday. Smith finishes his tenure at MSU with a 9–15 overall record and a 4–14 mark against Big Ten opponents, including the vacated wins from 2024. A disappointing 4–8 campaign this season — with just one Big Ten win and an eight-game losing streak, the longest in program history — ultimately led to the decision.
Trump administration cuts diminish foreign language education at MSU
Fewer people are studying foreign languages at Michigan State University this semester. That’s because the federal government has slashed funding for grant programs that have historically supported such scholarship across the country. The Department of Education has for decades administered National Resource Centers (NRCs), which were conceived during the Cold War as a means for the U.S. to enhance its understanding of international affairs. The DOE has also long distributed Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) fellowships, which pay for undergraduate and graduate students’ tuition when studying in such fields. Five MSU centers have, in years past, received funding through the federal government’s National Resource Center program. The MSU administrators who run those centers told The State News that they were notified by the DOE in September that they would not be receiving new grant funding for this academic year.
MSU Museum set to reopen in January following $28 million renovations
The Michigan State University Museum is set to reopen its doors to the public on Jan. 14, with new additions and exhibitions awaiting visitors and guests. This comes after the MSU Board of Trustees approved the $28 million renovation project for the century-old building in 2021, with the renovation process beginning in 2024. The building holds historical value to the university since being created in 1857, just two years after MSU, then called the Agricultural College of the State of Michigan, was founded. MSU Museum Director Devon Akmon said with the museum’s history intertwined with MSU’s, it’s hard to find other colleges and units that have lasted that long.
