MSU hockey comes up short, loses 2-1 in overtime
Anyone can create when there’s time and space, head coach Adam Nightingale said on Tuesday. It’s difficult to score when there’s not. On Saturday night, the Spartans did just that. With 39 seconds left to play, freshman forward Porter Martone evened the score amid a crowded net, sending the game to overtime. After dropping Game 1 in a 5-4 loss, No. 1 Michigan State hockey looked to split its series with No. 7 Wisconsin. MSU played tighter defense and sharper offense than the previous night, but gave up a power-play goal in the second period. Despite tying the game in the final period, the Spartans lost 2-1 in overtime.
Fourth quarter collapse extends MSU’s losing streak to eight
As the third quarter dwindled, Michigan State football held a 17-7 lead after a five-yard touchdown reception from redshirt junior wide receiver Chrishon McCray. A lead that came crashing down after a complete fourth-quarter collapse, as Iowa scored 17 unanswered points in the final 15 minutes. An electrifying third quarter filled with productive offense and a stifling defense looked like a turning point for the Spartans in a season of disappointment. Instead, it only led to more dismay, as the Hawkeyes flipped the script and won 20-17 on a last-second field goal.
Michigan State women’s basketball cruises to another victory over Eastern Illinois
EAST LANSING-Michigan State women’s basketball continued to cruise through its non-conference schedule Thursday night, beating Eastern Illinois 101-53. The Spartans record improves to 5-0 as they continue to dominate opponents on both sides of the ball. The Spartans got off to yet another hot start, jumping out to an early 7-0 lead and forcing the Panthers to call a timeout. Senior forward Grace VanSlooten left her mark in the first quarter, scoring nine points and adding two steals. Sophomore guard Kennedy Blair also made several key plays, but the Panthers hung around, only trailing by six at the end of the quarter. Head coach Robyn Fralick expressed displeasure with her team’s defensive performance in the first, but the Spartans rebounded, holding their opponents to just nine second-quarter points. It was VanSlooten, Blair, and senior guard Jayln Brown who made their presence felt. Jayln Brown would finish the game with 14 points, while VanSlooten had 14 at the half. At halftime, the Spartans had a 45-28 lead. The Spartans had 26 points in the paint at half, and had already forced 15 turnovers, something they’ve consistently done well all season. Depth played a big role in this game, and Fralick had high praise for her players.
Veterans lead the way in Spartans’ win over Detroit Mercy
EAST LANSING– The four captains for Michigan State men’s basketball combined for 56 points in the Spartans’ 84-56 victory over Detroit Mercy on Friday. Despite the 28-point margin, it wasn’t the smoothest path to victory for the Spartans. Self-inflicted turnovers and defensive lapses left Spartans head coach Tom Izzo discontent after the win.“I was disappointed, as you could imagine, I thought that Monty did a better job than I did,” Izzo said. The Titans did a good job of clogging passing lanes and made it difficult for the Spartans to get the ball inside the paint. MSU committed 12 turnovers and had plenty of empty possessions due to the active hands on the Detroit Mercy defense. MSU started the game on a 10-0 run, with junior forward Coen Carr leading the way. Carr scored 11 first half points, as he was a perfect 3-3 from the field and knocked down two three-pointers.
