Peter Soudan receives Big Ten Freshman of the Year
Michigan State men’s soccer midfielder Peter Soudan was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Year on Thursday, when the All Big Ten awards were announced. The native of Western Springs, Illinois becomes just the 5th Spartan to ever win the Big Ten Freshman of the Year award and the first since Jonathan Stout in 2022. Soudan was tied for the team lead in total points with 10, scoring three goals, including the biggest — the winner against No. 3 Indiana. He added a team-high four assists to cap a standout opening season in green and white. He played in all 16 games, starting 15, and was one of the Spartans’ top performers this season, bringing electrifying energy to every game when he was on the field.
MSU women’s soccer beats Milwaukee in first round of the NCAA tournament
It rained goals in East Lansing as MSU women’s soccer moved on to the second round of the NCAA tournament with an emphatic 4-1 win over Milwaukee. They will take on Wake Forest on Nov. 20th at DeMartin Stadium. Junior forward Kennedy Bell put the Spartans in front in the 20th minute, pouncing on a turnover by the Panther defense that left her in a 1v1 with the goalkeeper. The Big Ten Forward of the Year made no mistake, slotting it confidently past Milwaukee’s Bella Hollenbach for her 11th goal of the season. Bell departed the field with a shoulder injury in the 25th minute and did not return to the field of play. Luckily for the Spartans, her contributions while on the pitch were enough to kick MSU off in a comfortable win. Head coach Jeff Hosler said post-match that Bell remaining on the bench was precautionary and that she was available for the second half.
MSU women’s basketball dominance leads to 4-0 start
Sundays are usually considered a day of laziness across America, but not for Michigan State’s women’s basketball team, as they were anything but sluggish against Western Michigan. The Spartans opened the game on an 18-0 run, holding the Broncos scoreless until more than three minutes into the first quarter. It was a dominating start that essentially ended the game before it even began and set the tone for a 98-44 blowout victory, propelling MSU to a 4-0 start.
Martone Shines in Spartans’ Road Victory Against Irish
EAST LANSING—Michigan State hockey faced off against Notre Dame last night in South Bend, Indiana, at a sold-out Compton Family Ice Arena. The Spartans controlled the game and won 3-1 on the road. The Spartans overcame adversity early, as after a flurry of penalties following a fight behind their net, Michigan State was forced to kill a 3-on-4 and 4-on-5 penalty back-to-back, which was only possible due to a great series of saves by junior goaltender Trey Augustine. The Fighting Irish were only able to limit the Spartans’ attack for so long, as Michigan State’s top line struck shortly after their penalty kill. The Spartans’ top line was able to execute a great passing play to put Michigan State on top 1-0.
