MSU revises Campbell Hall’s gender-inclusive bathroom layout following complaints
When $37 million in renovations for Campbell Hall were completed in August, a key part of the renovations included the creation of gender-neutral bathrooms, the first for Michigan State University. Now, three months after the hall reopened, the bathrooms were changed back to gender-specific following controversy among some students and parents. The hall, which houses approximately 246 students, has informed residents that changes to the gender-neutral bathrooms will be made, a move that comes after a formal complaint was sent to MSU. The communication created confusion among some students.
MSU outmuscles Arkansas despite struggles from three-point range
In Michigan State men’s basketball’s 69-66 win over No. 14 Arkansas, the Spartans played with passion, grit, tenacious defense and physicality on the boards. But they didn’t have the touch from beyond the arc. It’s been a trend that has proved unfavorable for the Spartans in recent memory. Shot after shot, miss after frustrating miss. Last season, MSU shot 31 percent from beyond the arc. Last week against Colgate it went 6-for-21. Tonight against Arkansas, it went 1-for-14. “We’re not shooting the ball great,” MSU head coach Tom Izzo said. “That’s no secret. This will be a good learning game, because guys realized how hard you have to play, how physical the game is.”
East Lansing Film Festival screens “Souleymane’s Story” on opening night
The 28th Annual East Lansing Film Festival (ELFF) held its opening night at Studio C in the Meridian Mall. A small crowd filled the lobby of the theater as attendees bought concessions and mingled before the film. The doors opened at 7:00 p.m. for the opening night feature film Souleymane’s Story. This is the 28th year of the festival, with the first East Lansing Film Festival being held in 1997. The festival will run from Nov. 6 to Nov. 13 and will showcase over 40 films, ranging from feature-length films to short documentaries. This year’s films were chosen from 326 submissions that the film selection committee views and rates before a final decision is made by Director and Founder Susan W. Woods.
MSU hockey shuts out Penn State in series’ sweep
Throughout each matchup the Spartans have emphasized getting to their game quicker, and tonight they did just that. Less than 24 hours after an overtime win No. 1 Michigan State hockey returned to Munn Ice Arena, looking to sweep its series against No. 3 Penn State. The Spartans set the tone with a 1-0 early lead in the first and never trailed, going on to earn a 5-0 shutout. “I think that’s something we try and pride ourselves in, is getting on teams early,” senior forward Charlie Stramel said. “Playing north, playing simple and hard, and I think it worked in our favor tonight.”
