Proposals preview sweeping review of sexual misconduct policies
Michigan State University is deciding between three firms to conduct its review of how the university handles relationship violence and sexual misconduct, according to bidding documents obtained via a public records request. Their proposals — which include campus-wide surveys, group sessions with survivors and comprehensive policy reviews — provide the most detailed look yet at what the sweeping assessment might entail. They vary greatly in scope — and cost. Two bidders are relatively small consulting firms pitching projects that would cost less than $300,000. A third, more comprehensive bid comes from a global firm and is projected to cost nearly $3 million. The university faced a similar decision in 2023, after the campus shooting. Out of the seven firms that applied to create a review of what happened, MSU chose the second lowest-costing bid. The firm, which did not list any prior experience working with mass shootings, produced a 25-page report that largely lauded the response to the incident.
Tom Barrett asking MSU to adopt contested antisemitism definition
Republican congressman is asking Michigan State University to adopt a contentious definition of antisemitism. In a May letter obtained by The State News through a public records request, Rep. Tom Barrett — whose district includes MSU’s East Lansing campus — urged President Kevin Guskiewicz to formally incorporate the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s “working definition of antisemitism.” The group’s guidance is known for parsing ways in which criticisms of Israel can be considered discriminatory against Jews. That distinction has become salient in MSU campus politics recently, with the student government’s calling on the university earlier this semester to cancel a lecture from an Israeli scholar on the nation’s modern theater landscape. On the one hand, MSU has reason to be amenable to Barrett: the leader of his party, President Donald Trump, has used a perceived tolerance of campus antisemitism as a justification to slash federal funding to universities. Though MSU has largely stayed above the fray in that regard, running afoul of Barrett could make MSU’s standing with the federal government more precarious.
MSU men’s basketball starts season off with ugly win
Michigan State men’s basketball is back at the Breslin Center as they took on Colgate for their regular season opener. The Spartans started their season in the win column with contributions from the full team to get an 80-69 victory. Senior forward Jaxon Kohler led the team in scoring with 16 points, shooting 50% from the field, and would also secure a double-double with 15 rebounds. Redshirt sophomore guard Jeremy Fears Jr. was a key player in the win, continuing to grow in his floor general role running the offense to create scoring for himself and his teammates. Fears did just about everything in the game, putting up a double-double of 14 points and 10 assists along with five rebounds and five steals.
