President says he didn’t file charges against student protester
Michigan State University’s president distanced himself from the pending disciplinary action against a pro-Palestinian student activist accused by campus police of making him feel unsafe. In an interview on Thursday, Kevin Guskiewicz said he has never filed a complaint against a student, and that he only learned of the charges against social relations and policy senior Eli Folts when he read a news article about the saga.
CORES & CAMS groups face university funding cuts amid new mission statement requirements
Groups included in The Council of Racial and Ethnic Students & The Council of Advocacy and Marginalized Students (CORES & CAMS) will no longer receive automatic funding from Michigan State University. To remain registered student organizations (RSOs), they must change their mission statements in compliance with university-approved standards. Previously, $25,000 was allocated to CORES & CAMS groups from the university and deposited in their RSO accounts. The activities department of ASMSU’s Student Allocation Board (SAB), including CORES & CAMS groups, has been frozen because ASMSU’s governing documents are under review by the university.
Beauty and the Beast’ national tour performs at Wharton
Disney’s classic tale, “Beauty and the Beast,” will be performed at Wharton Center from October 14 to 19. “Beauty and the Beast,” directed and choreographed by Matt West, features music by Alan Menken, including his Academy Award-winning score. The songs, like “Be Our Guest,” were originally written by Menken and the late Howard Ashman. Caleb McArthur, a swing and understudy for Beast and Gaston, who attended the University of Michigan, said the root of the story is a beautiful, whimsical, and romantic tale. He describes “new comedy” as a part of this theatrical production, “if you’ve never seen ‘Beauty and the Beast,’ then it’s still very true to the Disney film.”
MSU hockey falls 4-3 in home opener after a buzzer-beater goal
The No. 2 Michigan State Spartans kicked off their season hosting a Hockey East opponent, the New Hampshire Wildcats. Although the team was ready to be back on their home rink, the night was deja vu of last year’s NCAA tournament, as the Spartans lost 4-3 off a last-second Wildcat goal.
