It’s safe to say that I am listening every night. Tracing it back to his English Roots, Devonte Hyne’s just released his fifth studio album, Essex Honey. With 14 unique tracks, “I Listened (Every Night)” comes in at track 13, slowing down the overall pace of the R&B album and showcasing Hynes’ vocal range and acoustic capabilities.
Dev Hynes explores the passage of time and being unclear with what you want in his three and a half minute ballad. The song overall has a much softer tone than many of his songs, which are more high energy.
The vulnerability that shines through the song is something admirable, and something that many listeners missed since he last released an album seven years ago.
Several lucky fans got to be some of the first to listen to this song at scattered listening parties throughout Europe and North America. Hynes said he strived to share his music with as many individuals as possible.
This song is truly unlike many of his well-known songs from his previous albums. Many people think of “Champagne Coast,” “Charcoal Baby” and “You’re Not Good Enough” when his songs come to mind.
“I Listened (Every Night)” is a beautiful testimony of the variety Blood Orange is able to produce and share with an audience.
