My Chemical Romance’s first studio album, I Brought You My Bullet’s, You Brought Me Your Love, was released in 2002. Despite its lack of mainstream success, the emerging post-hardcore and emo scene grew to love the album. Compared to the following albums, MCR’s sound is stripped back and unpolished.
“Early Sunset’s Over Monroeville”, the eighth track in the album, serves as a break between two harsher guitar driven tracks. It takes the listener off-guard, with its jangle-pop-like rhythm and soft guitar leads, but creates a perfect cubby for Gerard Way’s agony-ridden vocals. Rather than layering the track with complex arrangements, this song succeeds in its pop tendencies simplicity, highlighting the group’s versatility. Way’s vocals, with its roomy reverb sound, puts their beautiful lyricism on display. The lyrics draw inspiration from the classic 1978 zombie film Dawn of the Dead. Way’s emotional performance fills the otherwise uncomplicated listening experience.
