MSU announces strategic fundraising capital campaign; first of its kind since 2014
In a campus-wide email sent to the Michigan State University community on Sunday, President Kevin Guskiewicz announced the launch of a major new fundraising campaign, the first of its kind since 2014. The campaign, titled Uncommon Will, Far Better World, aims to push boundaries and take bold action to address some of the world’s most pressing challenges.
With the help of over 120,000 alumni and donors, the fundraising effort focuses on three key initiatives: expanding access to education, advancing research and global partnerships, and transforming MSU’s campus and technology.
Guskiewicz highlighted that this is a moment for MSU to be visionary, emphasizing that every Spartan — students, alumni, faculty, and staff — has a role in shaping the university’s future. The campaign aims not only to strengthen MSU but to impact lives and communities for generations to come.
MSU to consider combining Colleges of Human Medicine and Osteopathic Medicine
Michigan State University President Kevin Guskiewicz shared an update on the university’s health sciences strategy, revealing the results of a seven-month review by the Health Sciences Council, a group of deans and leaders appointed by Guskiewicz.
The review presents several options for MSU’s future in health sciences, including creating a new College of Health Professions, combining the Colleges of Human Medicine and Osteopathic Medicine, and launching disease-focused institutes. The goal is to reduce health disparities and ensure equitable healthcare access across Michigan by 2030.
Guskiewicz expressed particular interest in merging the two medical colleges, while preserving the unique strengths of each. He believes this would create one of the nation’s largest combined medical colleges, enhance research, and improve student experiences.
The proposal aligns with the “One Team, One Health” initiative, aiming to position MSU as a leader in addressing global health challenges, such as emerging diseases and pandemics.
Before making any decisions, Guskiewicz said the university will engage with stakeholders through town halls to ensure all options are carefully considered. He highlighted the strong support from healthcare leaders for this vision of transforming medical education and research at MSU.
