Fulbright scholar organizes exhibit documenting Ukraine conflict
In a world so easily dominated by the constant onslaught of new media and events, it can be hard to maintain focus on long-term events as they get swept under the rug to make way for the new thing. Michigan State University graduate student and Fulbright scholar Anna Smolko uses photography to show the events happening in her home of Kyiv, Ukraine, not allowing the issue to be swept under the rug. The exhibit “Ukraine: War and Resistance” is a photo gallery featuring photos taken in Ukraine from Russia’s initial invasion in 2014 to 2023. The exhibit is a traveling exhibit and will be shown in Snyder Hall until the end of March. American and Ukrainian Fulbright scholars took the photos and showed the war, as well as resilience, dignity, and resistance seen in Ukrainian communities. The more awful realities of war were not only captured but also the resistance Ukrainian communities put forth for themselves and the public to show that it would take more than an invasion to defeat them. This resistance is one wing, while the other holds nobility as well as resilience. The photographs are a form of art, showing these three traits in the communities.
Wilson Hall Residents express disappointment in newly-approved renovation plans
The Michigan State University Board of Trustees approved a nearly $35 million Wilson Hall renovation proposal on Feb. 6. Since then, past and present residents of the hall have taken to social media to express their disapproval of the plans, with some stating that they should have been included in the decision-making process. The renovation plans for Wilson Hall include converting the second-floor dining hall, which has been closed since 2020, into more learning spaces for the engineering program. According to LiveOn, Wilson Hall is a core engineering living-learning community, much like Case Hall is a living-learning community for the James Madison College. According to Associate Director for Communications and Outreach of LiveOn Bethany Balks, the renovations will also cover life safety updates funded by the RHS, including a new fire suppression system, a fire alarm system replacement, and emergency lighting. Political science freshman Jonah Kibin said he is not happy with the new renovation plans and their focus on Wilson Hall as an LLC rather than a residence hall. To raise awareness, Kibin turned to Reddit to spread the word. In his post, Kibin wrote that “Wilson Hall as it exists today only functions as a unit of the engineering department … where we’re basically just the decrepit janitor’s closet of South Neighborhood.”
Fralick named USA Basketball women’s U18 assistant coach
Michigan State women’s basketball head coach Robyn Fralick has been selected to serve as an assistant coach for the USA Basketball women’s U18 National Team, USA Basketball announced. The honor comes as no surprise to anyone who has followed the Spartans over the past three seasons. Fralick has led MSU to a 20-win season in each of her first three years, and with a 22-6 record heading into the final regular-season game, she has a chance to surpass her best mark yet. She became the first head coach to lead MSU to back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances in her first two seasons and guided the Spartans to a No. 12 ranking in the AP Top 25 this season, their highest mark in 15 seasons. Fralick will be making her USA Basketball coaching debut after serving as a court coach at the USA Women’s AmeriCup Team trials last year.
A Posthumous Collaboration | “She Knows Too Much” by Thundercat (feat. Mac Miller)
Today’s Jam of the Day is a bittersweet reunion — “She Knows Too Much,” a funky, emotionally layered track between Thundercat and the late Mac Miller. This is the 3rd track on Thundercat’s 4th studio album, Distracted, which will be released later in the year on April 3. Long before its official release, “She Knows Too Much” circulated in 2020 leaks, quietly becoming a cult favorite among fans still mourning Mac Miller’s passing. This isn’t the first time Thundercat and Miller have crossed paths, previously linking up on Miller’s “What’s the Use?” and Thundercat’s “Hi.” This song carries heavy weight after Thundercat’s last studio album, It Is What It Is, which dealt with Mac Miller’s death and its impact on him. The new album seems to suggest Thundercat is heading back to his funkier ways seen in Drunk, but there is that lingering sense of loss that will undoubtedly shape this album’s feel. “She Knows Too Much” is the story of realizing someone just isn’t right for you. It also serves as a beautiful reminder of the collaborations Thundercat and Miller have had over the years, a collaboration that continues to resonate long after the studio sessions ended. Thundercat’s 4th studio album is shaping up to be a baseline expedition into failed relationships and what causes them, dropping April 3. You can listen to it on Spotify, Apple Music and most other music platforms.
