EAST LANSING— MSU wrestling will host conference opponent Northwestern on February 1, hoping to end its current losing streak. In the Spartans’ most recent matchup, they fell short 13-31 against the Indiana Hoosiers, extending their losing streak to five. The Spartans’ record currently sits at 3-6 overall and 0-4 in conference play. Michigan State has yet been able to pick up a win at home this season, so a win over Northwestern would establish a stronger presence at home.
Northwestern’s last matchup came against MSU’s in-state rival, Michigan, which resulted in a 4-38 defeat. The Wildcats current record is 3-5 overall, with them being 1-4 in Big Ten play. MSU isn’t the only team in this matchup trying to break out of a cold streak, with Northwestern coming up short in its last 4 duals.
In the upcoming matchup, MSU must look out for Northwestern’s 133-pound senior Sean Spidle, who is 12-6 this season and recently picked up a bout win against Michigan winning 7-0 by major decision. Other notable people on the Wildcats roster include 174-pound redshirt freshman Eddie Enright, who is 19-7 and 125-pound sophomore Dedrick Navarro, who is ranked 21st in his weight class.
However, the Spartans are not a team to take lightly at all with standouts like 197-pound Kael Wisler, who is 18-6 and 157-pound redshirt freshman Darius Marines, who is 14-8 this season. In MSU’s latest dual against Indiana redshirt heavyweight junior Josh Terrill picked up his third consecutive dual victory of the season.
Last time these two teams had a dual meet was on February 7, 2025, with Northwestern achieving victory 27-12. MSU wrestling has a losing record of 6-10 all-time against the Wildcats. The Green and White have proved competitive all-time against Northwestern at home with a record of 4-4. Both respective teams are eager to end their losing streaks and pick up momentum that they can carry through the rest of the season.
The dual meet will take place at Jenison Field House on Sunday, February 1 at 2 p.m.
