“Press your cheek to mine /
Pull me deep into the dream, so I can live inside.”
On Jan. 20, Cat Clyde, a Canadian indie-folk singer and songwriter, released “Another Time,” the first single for her upcoming album Mud Blood Bone. This album will be Clyde’s fourth full-length studio album and contains 11 intimate songs that explore the meaning of time and connection.
“Like a flower in springtime /
That must bloom and die.”
Following the release, Clyde mentions her thought process and emotions behind this song, “I was pondering my experience of connection and intimacy, alongside the reality that life is constantly moving and changing. Thinking about the power to bottle up and lean into meaningful moments and memories… This song speaks to the grief and the joy of evolving constantly.”
“Keep me by your window /
And watch my petals dry.”
The beginning of the song starts with a quiet, dream-like state that slowly builds to a twangy, feverish collaboration between Clyde’s voice and the instruments. The bass and electric guitar carry you through the lyrics, supporting Clyde’s hypnotic vocals, while also not quite letting you finish soaking in each word. The constant tempo changes resemble the ups and downs of life and how, at times, our lives can seem to slow down or speed up.
“Sway me gently, baby /
Turn me in the tide.”
Clyde continues to prove her ability to express complex feelings within her music. “Another Time” is like a love letter to our ever-changing, yet constant selves. We are forever growing and adapting, but will always be the same person.
“Fill me with your breath /
Set me down easy like a sky /
Ripple in the water /
Teardrop in your eye /
Pass me through the way you do /
To another time.”
