EAST LANSING– Michigan State University men’s tennis will compete against Western Michigan University on Wednesday in East Lansing, Michigan. The match is the first non-conference match of the young season, with the start time being at 5:00 p.m.
Michigan State aims to start its spring season with some wins and take advantage of the depth it has in both singles and doubles. Historically, Michigan State has played well at home against teams like Western Michigan, as well as winning handily over them last year when they faced each other.
Western Michigan possesses a definite advantage in doubles competition. The Broncos consist of two doubles teams that are ranked nationally, creating a realistic opportunity for an immediate score in their favor through winning the first doubles point. The result of the first doubles will likely indicate how the match will progress.
Michigan State’s experience and depth will also be significant in singles competitions. Veteran players compete in the top spots on the roster and offer leadership to their newer counterparts in the mid to lower positions, while younger players bring athleticism and vitality to the match. Western Michigan will utilize its returning players as a means of competing against the Spartans and attempting to win points in close matches.
Both teams face an early challenge in their respective seasons with the start of this week’s contest. Together with their regional proximity and differing strengths, Wednesday’s match will be a critical chance to see how Michigan State can establish itself at home and how Western Michigan can demonstrate its ability to compete with some of the best teams in the Big Ten.
The Michigan State men’s tennis team will host Western Michigan on Wednesday at 5:00 p.m. in East Lansing.
