EAST LANSING- Speed, accuracy, and a shard of ice. Next week, one of the premier events in the Grand Prix series will take place. Skate America kicks off the U.S. section of the International Skating Union, and it will be the first opportunity to see who is expected to dominate the season. Lake Placid, New York, will hold Skate America Nov. 14-16, where the early favorites reveal themselves to the world.
Of the expected competing U.S. skaters, Jason Brown brings his continuing stamp of expressive artistry that makes his every performance feel precise and intentional. Expect Brown to have a strong showing. While he does not decide to attempt the most difficult quads, his clean execution often resonates with the judges and supports a strong free skate with the technical components he plans.
Alysa Liu has potential to lead the U.S. women, particularly after her return season last year, and her performances were of great bravery and execution after her long break due to injury. She was amazing last season, and she’s returning to get us everything. Liu thrives under pressure, as we saw her compete last season at Grand Prix and nationals. If she can do those elements clean, she’ll be in contention for the gold even with some new stars from around the world.
Skate America is more than a competition, it’s a window into the growth of the sport with emphasis on taking risks; innovation. Personal expression matters almost as much as technical perfection. Fans should be in for a raucous event leading to a fascinating Grand Prix season.
