EAST LANSING– Over the weekend, Michigan State women’s tennis hosted the Michigan State Classic presented by Auto Owner’s Insurance. The classic was hosted at the MSU Outdoor Rec Tennis Courts, right off of Wilson Road. Visiting teams were DePaul University, University of Michigan, Northwestern University, and Western Michigan University.
The rounds started off with doubles on Friday, lasting through the afternoon until singles started at 1:30 p.m.
On Friday, senior Issey Purser and freshman Nina Plihal defeated a WMU duo; however were defeated by a team from Michigan in the second set.
Four Spartans competed in singles that afternoon, with senior Sarah Fazlagic and redshirt-junior Hanna Tsitavets both losing to DePaul.
Plihal and Purser returned for singles that afternoon, with Plihal winning her match against her DePaul opponent, and Purser winning in a tiebreaker against DePaul.
On Saturday, Fazlagic and Plihal faced DePaul once again in the first set of doubles matches, but ended up falling 6-3.
Purser and Plihal faced WMU in the second round; however lost to the duo in the final portion of the match.
Singles began at 1 p.m., with Fazlagic starting off and losing her match against Western.
Purser went next, competing in three sets against Depaul, but was ultimately defeated. Plihal was the last to go in the singles rounds; however was overtaken by her Big Ten opponent from Michigan.
On Sunday morning, the Spartans competed in contention rounds to finish off the weekend.
Fazlagic won her singles match against WMU, with Plihal doing the same shortly after.
Tsitavets finished out the singles rounds for the Spartans; however was defeated by her Western opponent.
Despite the several losses dealt to the players, the Spartans had major success in the contention rounds.
Plihal made her green & white debut over the weekend, signing to MSU just three months ago, after being the No. 6 ranked player in Austria.
Next weekend, the Spartans will be on the road at the Wolverine Invitational in Ann Arbor.
