“You’re alright, but I’m here, darling, to enjoy the party.”
It’s 2011, you’re listening to the top 40 hits on your mom’s car radio. Now, it’s 2025, you’re listening to 2010s music on the pink mP3 player you got from Facebook Marketplace.
The album Smash, where the guy with the tennis racket could be mistaken for Micheal Cera, includes the worldwide hit single, “Hello” by Martin Solveig and Dragonette. Just like Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used to Know,” “Hello” can be considered Solveig’s one hit wonder (though with happier undertones and a vibe more befitting for an iPod promotion). It’s the artist’s most successful single to date and has been featured in Tim Horton’s commercials and Dance Central 3.
The song is simple and mentions the word “party” 14 times in a span of 3:10 minutes. Very simply, the story is about someone enjoying a party, not looking for any deep connections. “Hello” is the song that no one ever knows the name of but still sings along to. The song is a testament to a good time – it serves as a reminder to enjoy the party. Whether it’s just a party or life or whatever, sometimes we get caught up in the existentialities of the world but it’s important to be present in the moment.
If there is a song that deserved to be in its own tennis-coming-of-age movie, it is “Hello.”
“Don’t get too excited ’cause that’s all you’ll get from me, hey!”
