East Lansing— The Michigan State baseball team will head to Iowa City, Iowa, to take on the Iowa Hawkeyes this weekend for their first road series in the Big Ten.
This weekend series will begin on Friday as there will be a doubleheader. The last game of the series will be on Saturday afternoon.
After starting 12-2, the Spartans have cooled down a bit as they are on a two-game losing streak, as one of those losses comes to Michigan.
Junior pitcher Joseph Dzierwa has been dominant when he is on the mound, as he has a record of 4-0. Dzierwa ranks in the top 20 nationally in ERA, WHIP, and strikeouts. When he is on the mound, he gets people out, and Michigan State tends to win.
Senior outfielder JT Sokolove and senior infielder Sam Busch have been the heart and soul of the Spartans offense. Busch leads the team with five home runs and has 17 RBIs with a 1.118 OPS. Sokolove leads the team in batting average and hits, with a .321 batting average and 17 hits.
On the Iowa side, the Hawkeyes are led by junior infielder Gable Mitchell, who has a .367 batting average, 22 hits, and 10 RBIs. The Hawkeyes ace of the staff is Aaron Savary, who has a 1.66 ERA along with 28 strikeouts.
Game one of the series will feature Dzierwa and Savary, who both are in the top five in the Big Ten for ERA.
