EAST LANSING- No. 22 MSU got the road win this past Wednesday against Rutgers, beating the Scarlet Knights 70-60. The Spartans are now 14-3 overall, and 4-2 in the Big Ten.
Graduate guard Julia Ayrault put up 12 points with nine rebounds and four assists, followed by junior guard Emma Shumate who put up 12 points with four made three-pointers.
Junior forward Grace Vanslooten put up 11 points with six rebounds, and graduate guard Jaddan Simmons and junior guard Theryn Hallock both put up nine points.
MSU defense forced Rutgers to 22 turnovers, resulting in 26 points scored for the Spartans, and Senior guard/forward Jocelyn Tate put up three steals and two blocks.
MSU offense struggled from the arc, going 6-28 and shooting 21% from the three-point range.
Despite the lack of three-point shots, MSU was able to beat Rutgers down the court, and walk away with a Big Ten win.
The Spartans look to continue their two-game win streak at Illinois this Sunday, followed by a game against Penn State back in the Breslin Center on Wednesday.
The Spartans need to continue to win in the Big Ten if they want to remain ranked in the AP top 25, and they must secure wins against unranked teams.
A win at Illinois would be huge for the Spartans and could increase their confidence before heading back to East Lansing.
MSU and Illinois will tip off Sunday at State Farm Center at 3:30 p.m. on B1G+.
