ANN ARBOR– The No. 1 Michigan State Spartans were upset by the No. 10 Michigan Wolverines in overtime by a score of 3-2.
“I think we did a lot of good things but at the end of the day you have to put the nail in the coffin and we didn’t do that,” Michigan State forward Karsen Dorwart said.
The Spartans had their fair share of chances, leading the game in shots 37-32 but Michigan would prevail in overtime thanks to Wolverines forward Garrett Schifsky, who was able to lift it past Spartans goaltender Trey Augustine for the game-winner.
The Spartans were the ones who gained control of the game early, with Dorwart tossing the puck on net from a poor angle towards Michigan goaltender Logan Stein, unexpectedly it snuck right through the five hole of the Wolverines’ netminder to get Michigan State on the board.
That would be the only flaw for Stein on the entire night as he stood up against the Spartans for most of the night, making 35 saves.
The rest of the first period wasn’t rather uneventful, with both squads traded penalty kills on two-minute minors. The Spartans got a few chances on their man advantage but could not convert. And on the kill, Michigan State was able to kill off the penalty easily with the Wolverines being unable to produce a shot.
This gave Michigan State an early 1-0 lead, a lead they wouldn’t relinquish until Wolverines forward Evan Werner capitalized on Michigan’s man advantage midway through the second period.
Augustine was able to stonewall the Wolverines’ first 14 shots, but the front pressure was able to hinder the sophomore’s chances of maintaining the shutout.

After the rivals traded blows at the beginning of the third period, Michigan State finally broke through. Spartans forward Joey Larson netted the goal on the end of a pretty breakthrough pass from defenseman David Gucciardi to Dorwart, who set up Larson for his eighth goal of the season.
Augustine withstood a flurry of shots from the Wolverines in the third period. Michigan outshot the Spartans 13-10 in the third period. Despite 29 stops from Augustine, Wolverines forward T.J. Hughes was able to get the best of the Spartans goalie to tie the game late in the third period.
After 60 minutes of play, the game was tied at two which called for five minutes of three-on-three overtime.
Augustine flashed the leather in overtime, halting a few chances for Michigan, but it wasn’t enough as Schifsk would call the game less than two minutes into extra time.
Michigan State falls to 18-3-2 on the season and with the Minnesota Golden Gophers beating Notre Dame on Friday, the Spartans fall to No. 2 in the Big Ten standings.
These rivals will cap the series at Munn Ice Arena on Saturday, in what will be the 350th meeting between two historic programs.
