Genre: Swedish Sadboy | “Ghosts” by Yung Lean and Bladee

Genre: Swedish Sadboy | “Ghosts” by Yung Lean and Bladee

Swede Jonatan Aron Leandoer Håstad has worn a handful of different hats since his rise during the cloud rap era of 2013. Under the alias Yung Lean, he’s managed to carve a niche for himself as one of underground rap’s most enigmatic figures. Listening to his most popular song, “Ginseng Strip 2002,” gives one an idea of the kind of melancholic, hazy box that Yung Lean placed most of his music in. Throughout his career, he’s worked closely with another experimental Swedish art collective known as Drain Gang, frequently collaborating with its most popular members, Bladee and Ecco2k.

Not content with just making rap, however, Yung Lean has frequently explored alternative rock under the name Jonatan Leandoer96. With this project, he explores traditional alt-rock sounds as well as shoegaze and new wave with songs like “Blue Light,” “Wooden Girl,” and “Rivers of Another Town.”

Bladee, in the meantime, has been releasing some of the most cutting-edge music in the rap genre today with albums like Icedancer and Crest. So, it’s only natural that these two would collaborate on a full project. Sweden is only so big, after all.

Their collaborative album, Psykos, is a perfect blend of the sounds both artists have been exploring over the most recent arc of their respective careers. “Ghost,” in particular, captures the melodic, monotone hooks of Bladee’s most recent work in a net of Midwest-emo-flavored-goodness that only Yung Lean could cast.

Of course, with lyrics like “Only you can glue my blue and broken shattered, battered porcelain heart” and “Even hate from you would have me thankful,” one thing becomes incredibly clear: This is a piece for when you’re in your feelings. It is a perfect song for those classic gray-skied Michigan days or for worrying about what’s next after graduation. Give this one a listen when you’re in the mood to brood.
