LA-based indie pop band The Marías released their new song, “Run Your Mouth,” Thursday, March 7. This short and fun single kicks off their new album, Submarine, which comes out later this year. “Run Your Mouth” is about anger and somebody bringing you down, but it will make you want to dance for two minutes and 40 seconds.

While “Run Your Mouth” is in English, The Marías are known for having both English and Spanish songs. The band has one previous album called Cinema and two EPs, Superclean Vol.1 and Superclean Vol. 2. The Marías have a unique retro and nostalgic sound with hints of jazz, taking inspiration from the ‘60s all the way to the ‘90s. The band is consistent to where if you like one song, you are likely to enjoy most of their music.

Now, for “Run Your Mouth” itself, there is a lot to be said for this shorter track. The lead singer María Zardoya has a voice that is mesmerizing, capturing the listener. The beginning has a calmer instrumental, using synth. As the song progresses, the instruments and her vocals pick up into a more upbeat danceable sound.

Although the song is upbeat, Zardoya sings about a toxic relationship where the other person runs their mouth and doesn’t let her speak. She expresses the feeling of being stuck and held down in life by this individual, while they blame her for everything that happened between them, trying to teach her a lesson. This song is all about confronting this person and not letting them walk all over you and continue to weigh you down.

“When we talk about /

Everything that happened /

Would rather sit around /

I don’t need a lesson /

You just call me out /

Call me when I’m distant /

Always run your mouth /

I don’t wanna listen.

This single was accompanied by a ‘90s-esque music video directed by Bethany Vargas, who also directed the trailer that came out a few weeks ago for Submarine, which comes out May 31. The trailer, album cover and album name have parallels to the Titanic Rising album by Weyes Blood, however the songs themselves are sonically distinct. Both feature underwater elements. The Marías even have a pre-order for a water cover vinyl on their website. “Run Your Mouth” is a fun start to new music from The Marías.
