A Collab to Remember | “A Night to Remember” by beabadoobee and Laufey

The world of hopeless romantics was taken by storm a mere couple of weeks ago as indie love ballad queens beabadoobee and Laufey announced they would be releasing a duet. Laufey and beabadoobee have been friends for a while now — admiring each other’s style and musical careers —, and fans have been desperate for a collaboration between the two unique personalities.

With “A Night to Remember,” the duo wanted to step away from their typical sound and branch into something a little more sensual. Blending both of their instrumental styles into a perfect arrangement of jazzy bossa nova and silky acoustic and strings, this song follows the story of a memorable and romantic evening between a duo that likely will not reconnect after.

“You enchanted me /

And whispered sweet nothings in my ear /

I shivered beneath you /

All wrapped up in embers /

It was a night to remember.”

In a statement from Stereogum, beabadoobee recalls the process of creating the song saying, “I’ve been writing with a lot of different rhythms recently, also with strings and nods to more classical sounds. Laufey is a great fit for this sound, and we had started hanging out in London, so we got in the studio together to work on music and try ideas with my producer, Jacob. We also hung in New York on my tour and started becoming closer friends. We wrote ‘A Night To Remember’ and decided we wanted to write something that sounds grand but a bit more sexy lyrically and have fun with that theme.”

Laufey explains the driving point of the song: “There are so many songs about being rejected as a woman, and this song is about being on the other side of the coin — having one great night then walking away. Reclaiming the narrative!”

Although their styles are similar, they are not the same, and this song provides a wonderful collision of their energies harmonizing into a perfect blend. With a more jazzy style from Laufey’s end and a more bouncy yet sultry style from Bea’s end, this song is a perfect mixture and impossible to skip.
