EAST LANSING,Mich- As was the case during the 2021 season, head coach Jeff Hosler and the Michigan State women’s soccer team have added a transfer from Grand Valley State University, this time being freshmen defender Mia Hansen.

Hansen is the fifth player to transfer to Michigan State this offseason and the first to come from Hosler’s former coaching spot.

She is following in the footsteps of last season’s star addition in forward Ava Cook; Hansen played alongside Cook in the COVID-shortened 2021 spring season in what was Hosler’s final season as the head coach of the Lakers.

Hansen arrives in East Lansing with a wealth of experience. Overall, she played in 28 games for Grand Valley, 25 of which were starts. In the shortened 2021 spring season, she appeared in all eight games, starting in six. Those starts included all three rounds of the GLIAC tournament as Grand Valley went on to win the conference tournament championship 3-0 over Northern Michigan.

She added individual honors to the team success as she subsequently received GLIAC Freshman of the Year honors

In the fall, she played in 20 of Grand Valley’s 26 games, starting in 19 of them. She missed the GLIAC tournament and the first two rounds of the NCAA tournament, but was back in the lineup for the final four games as the Lakers went on to win the Division II national championship over St. Rose (Albany, New York) 3-2 in a shootout. She was subsequently named to the All-GLIAC second team for the fall season.

Hansen appeared in 1,114 minutes during the fall 2021 season and 444 minutes during the spring season. She follows former Colgate defender Ruby Diodati, former Florida State forward Sierra Curtis, former Butler midfielder Celia Gaynor and former Hartford midfielder Kelly Severini as transfer additions for MSU this offseason.
