EAST LANSING– The figure skating community was rocked by the announcement of Ava Marie Ziegler’s retirement from the sport on January 8th, 2026. At just 19 years old, many people are shocked and saddened by her retirement, given her youth. While the medals and scores that Ava earned over the years will forever be a part of her legacy, the unique way that Ava represented herself in the sport will be her true legacy.
Instead of measuring Ava’s skating career by the amount of time she skated, we should measure her legacy based on what she accomplished during the time she skated. Her achievement in winning the 2023 NHK Trophy as her very first Grand Prix title in only her second attempt at an international event created a huge impression around the world. Ava showed not only that she was a fearless athlete, but also that she had the ability to execute technical elements under extreme pressure. Ava proved to the world that an American girl, who is younger that most of her competitors and has a heart of a champion, can overcome the odds and make lasting impression on her sport.
Ava’s special qualities cam from several aspects of her performance on the ice. The skills she demonstrated in her ability to generate speed, perform expressive choreography and competently execute technical elements in a challenging manner with many large jump elements made watching her performances an enjoyable experience for the greater majority of skating fans. Beyond enjoying the visual beauty of Ava’s performance, skating fans were also able to emotionally connect with her programs due to her unique ability to combine athletic ambition with artistry, creating an emotional appreciation for her skating and each performance felt like it belonged to her and had been created with integrity.
In addition to what Ava accomplished on the ice, she also battled some degree of adversity during her competitive career due to her strong of injuries and necessary surgical interventions, which disrupted her chances for other possibilities of success. Rather than give up, Ava instead decided to focus on her long-term health, which was a major moment of bravery for any young athlete in such a competitive field where both the clocks are on and the pressure is never relenting.
In the opinion of some, Ava Ziegler’s retirement may seem somewhat premature. In my opinion, however, it was on the job, at the height of her game, and with tremendous class and bravery. This should not be overlooked. Ava’s retirement at a young age should remind us that competitive figure skating is a privilege for those who participate in it and adds to the quality of their lives, rather than detracting from it.
Ava’s career is a clear demonstration that greatness is not simply associated with medals won at the Olympics or World Championships. Rather, greatness is determined by the number of moments that resonate with fans of an athlete’s generation. Ava provided these moments to her fans. She has inspired a generation of young skaters that both resilience and style have a rightful place next to technical excellence.
Although her competitive career has ended, Ava’s impact on figure skating will never fade away. She will continue to inspire skaters everywhere, whether she chooses to be a coach, mentor, or to devote her time to a different passion. The legacy of Ava Ziegler as one of the greatest skaters will always be assured. As a competitor, she has elevated figure skating during the time she was skating, and this is certainly a reason to celebrate.
