Before the start of MSU’s fall 2025 semester, Michigan State Athletics announced a partnership with Levy, distributing new concessions across all athletic venues on campus. Food and beverage stands went from being university-run to being provided by a third party.
Levy, a Chicago-based company, distributes concessions at “more than 350 sports and entertainment venues, cultural attractions, special events and convention centers”. According to Levy’s press release in July, the team plans to speed up and improve concessions, as well as collaborate with the athletics department in order to bring completely new ideas to the table.
Levy and Michigan State Athletics have come out with a list of highlights they intend to bring into the gameday concessions experience, including new self-service technology, food and beverage pop-ups and opportunities for local organizations to get involved in game days.
Previously, Spartan athletic venues had university-operated concessions, so operations have changed now that concessions are privatized. In previous years, Combo-X-Change was an option for students to purchase gameday snacks, however options were limited.
Sarah Snyder, a junior, has been attending football games for several years. She has frequently purchased the food and beverages that the stadium and other venues provide.
“I have gotten some combos at the games last year, and those were very good,” Snyder said. “I loved getting my combos at the games, but I do know this year the combos have changed.”
Despite changes in stadium food stands, Snyder thinks the gameday food still compares to other football stadiums she’s been to in the past, as well as the snacks provided at Munn Ice Arena.
One of the new features Levy has brought to venues across campus has been on-the-go markets. These markets consist of fridges and stands with self-serve capabilities. Levy’s intent is to speed up lines and streamline the process of food and beverage purchases.
Alyssa Vettraino, a junior majoring in kinesiology on the pre-med track, described how the on-the-go markets function and their benefits.
“They had little fridges lined up, and then you just walked up, grabbed what you wanted, and then the lady would scan you out,” Vettraino said. “I preferred that.”
Vettraino enjoys the new systems put in place at the stadium, and found that the lines seemed to move faster at the on-the-go markets.
“You could literally just grab any drink you wanted,” Vettraino said. “And then she would just check your ID, scan you out, and then you were good to go instead of waiting in line.”
As a season ticket holder, she says that she is hoping to see more on-the-go style stands as games continue this season.
In addition to MSU, Levy provides for other colleges such as Indiana University, St. Thomas University, and many others. Levy will provide concessions to Spartan Stadium, the Breslin Center, Munn Ice Arena and other on campus buildings going into the 2025-2026 season.
