Embracing Musical Evolution | An Interview With Cheem

Cheem live at The Goblin Zone in Lansing, Michigan.

Cheem is a band that has been ascribed many labels over time, from emo to the self-identified “nu-pop.” The five-piece band has released four albums and multiple singles and EPs, the latest being Guilty Pleasure on July 28, 2023. The sound of each album differs widely, as does Cheem’s constantly-evolving identity as a band. With a variety of musical influences and two vocalists, their abilities for musical exploration seem limitless.

Hailing from the Connecticut DIY scene, the band stopped in Lansing on the tour for their newest album. Plans changed, and the show was moved to a small DIY house venue. The living room of this very house is where we discussed their influences, social media, the importance of DIY spaces and community, and playing shows in rock-climbing gyms.

Listen to their newest album, Guilty Pleasure, below.
