Pistons add Nelson, Ennis hours before NBA trade deadline ends

Just 10 days ago the Detroit Pistons acquired Blake Griffin in a trade with the Los Angeles Clippers, and with the NBA trade deadline ending this afternoon, the Pistons are making some more last-minute moves to its roster.

According to Yahoo! Sports’ Shams Charania, the Pistons have acquired Jameer Nelson from the Chicago Bulls in exchange for Willie Reed. Reed was part of the Clippers’ deal that sent him to Detroit 10 days ago and was in the midst of serving a six-game suspension stemming from a domestic violence incident back in August. Detroit is also receiving the Bulls’ 2022 second-round pick.

The 15-year pro out of St. Joseph’s played six seasons under Stan Van Gundy in Orlando and is averaging 5.1 points and 3.6 assists per game this season in 43 games played. With Reggie Jackson still sidelined, Detroit added greatly-needed depth to its point guard position. Ish Smith has been a serviceable fill-in for Jackson, but the Pistons needed another guard that can handle the ball and run the offense off the bench.

Nelson will be very familiar with the offense Van Gundy runs and will be more than capable running the offense as a viable option off the bench. Nelson doesn’t make the Pistons a title contender, but he provides a nice steady hand off the bench as Detroit tries to acclimate to its new big-man-centered core.

ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski also reported that Detroit acquired James Ennis III from Memphis in exchange for Brice Johnson–another player they had acquired in the Clippers deal–and a second-round pick. Ennis, a three-year pro out of Long Beach State, is averaging 6.9 points and 3.5 rebounds in 45 games this season. Ennis is in his final year of his $3.028 million contract.

Since acquiring Griffin, Detroit has won its last five games and sits just one game back of Philadelphia for the eighth spot in the Eastern Conference. The Pistons will host the Clippers tomorrow night on ESPN with tipoff set for 7 p.m.
