Denzel Valentine, Gary Harris make USA Select Baseketball Team

According to the Detroit News, former Spartans Gary Harris and Denzel Valentine were among 25 players chosen to participate in Team USA’s training camp in July that is prep for the 2016 Rio Olympics. The Select Team is a mix of young NBA players as well as players that stood out in college and will ultimately be drafted. Making the team does not necessarily mean a spot on the senior team that heads to Brazil, but it is mainly meant to gain Team USA experience and hopefully make an impact on the Olympic team down the road.

Gary Harris being selected is a testament to his hard work. He started all 76 games that he played this year with the Denver Nuggets, as well as upping his scoring average almost 10 points per game from his rookie year. Harris will battle a myriad of players that includes Detroit Pistons’ players Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Stanley Johnson.

For Valentine, his selection caps off his award-laden senior year in college, as well as gives him great training for the NBA. He will get to learn from NBA star forwards currently on the team in Kevin Durant and Paul George. Valentine would gain the best insight from forward LeBron James if he decides to participate, as both James and Valentine have similar games in their pass-first mentality and court vision.

The Team USA training camp will take place July 18-21 in Las Vegas.
