Wrestling Soars at EMU Open

The Michigan State wrestling team went 2-1 at the Eastern Michigan Duals on Saturday in Ypsilanti. The Spartan squad defeated Kent State (32-7) and Olivet College (44-0) and lost the match to Chattanooga (24-13).

Nick McDiarmid (197) John Rizqallah (184) Roger Wildmo (157) and Javier Gasca (133) went 3-0 on the day, setting the bar for MSU.

The first match against the Golden Flashes of Kent State was an impressive win for the Spartans. The final tally was 32-7, with the Spartans winning eight of the 10 matches.

Garth Yenter (141) and McDiarmid (197) recorded pins, while Wildmo (157) had a 15-0 technical fall.

The Chattanooga Mocs were a tall task for the Spartans. The Mocs won the match by a score of 24-13 and sealed the deal with a fall, technical fall and a major decision to ensure their 11-point victory.

Against the Olivet Comets, Gasca recorded a major decision at 133 with an 11-3 win over No. 12 Nick Soto, while Rizqallah, Wildmo, and McDiarmid also put some numbers on the board. The Spartans won all 10 matches in the 44-0 shutout. MSU got five major decisions in the match and recorded three pins (Nash, Gasca, Rizqallah).

The Spartans return to action against the Minnesota Gophers in Minneapolis on Friday, Nov. 21.
