MSU gymnastics finishes second as UCLA dominates Big Ten Championships
No. 11 MSU gymnastics competed in the Big Ten Championships in Champaign, Illinois, earning a 197.475 to finish second overall. The Spartans entered as the No. 4 seed, competing in the top session for the fifth straight year. They faced off against No. 1 seed UCLA who won the Championships with a 198.100, and outperformed No. 2 seed Minnesota who earned a 196.900 for third and No. 3 seed Michigan who earned a 196.800 for fourth. Although the Spartans performed well to finish second, they were no match for UCLA. MSU entered the championship with a national qualifying score of 197.056, ranking 11th nationally. The top 16 teams earn seeds for the NCAA tournament, keeping the Spartans in strong position for Regionals. NQS is calculated by taking a team’s top six scores, three of which must be away, dropping the high and averaging the remaining five. This performance should boost MSU’s NQS and maintain its seeded position.
Jake Boss Jr. reaches 500 career wins in series victory over Iowa
MSU baseball kept its momentum going after a 2-0 win over Iowa in its home opener, following up with a 15-5 victory in the first game of a doubleheader. Not only was the dominant victory the team’s highest scoring of the season, but it also secured the series win over the Hawkeyes and gave head coach Jake Boss Jr. his 500th career win. Boss earned his 475th win in charge of the Spartans, along with 25 wins from his single season at Eastern Michigan. He entered the season fresh off a contract extension from the university and continues to cement himself as one of the most successful coaches in Spartan baseball history, ranking third in career wins in program history. Despite the loss, the Spartans won their first series since the opening weekend against #8 Louisville, taking the first two games against Iowa and Boss reached a career milestone 500th win. MSU will take a short in-state road trip to face off against Central Michigan on Tuesday, March 24, before returning home for their second consecutive home series against Purdue with the first game on Friday, March 27.
Campus rallies around MSU’s March run to Sweet 16
As Michigan State men’s basketball advances to the Sweet 16 with a win over Louisville Cardinals men’s basketball on Saturday, students across campus reflected on the victory with a sense of unity that defines March Madness in East Lansing. Much of that excitement centered around junior forward Coen Carr, whose performance stood out to multiple students. There was also a very strong sense of pride in how the team carried itself throughout the game. “I’m really proud of our team. I know we’re making it to the next round,” said Cameron, a sophomore biochemistry major. “It just shows how much work they’ve put in, and it’s exciting to see that pay off right now.” For others, the atmosphere surrounding the game elevated the experience. “I thought the game went great. I was out at the bar, you know, the energy was fantastic,” said junior Grant Bennett, a communication leadership and strategy major. “All the fans seemed super supportive, and I was really just proud of students watching our team go out there and make it to the Sweet 16. It felt like everyone was locked in together.”
