EAST LANSING, MI.— After taking last weekend’s series 2-1 over the Louisville Cardinals, the Spartans look to continue their upset streak and dance with No. 3 Texas Longhorns this weekend.
Last weekend’s performance from the Spartan side can be summed up by how incredible their bullpen has been to start the season. Aiden Donovan and Carter Monke let up a total of 3 runs and 8 hits in 9 total innings pitched against the, at the time, No. 8 Cardinals. Spartan bats have also been off to a hot start, as they have six batters batting over .250 to start the season.
However, this is both the highest-ranked team Sparty has faced since playing Oregon State in 2014, and the first time that Michigan State has ever faced the Longhorn baseball squad.
If they thought a series win against the No. 8 team was tough, then they better be even more prepared to face No. 3. For Texas, it will be defending its alma mater on their own grass and gravel. So far this season, Texas’s bats have started the season red hot with 43 hits and a combined team .341 (31st nationally).
The Longhorn bullpen is also nothing to overlook, as they have a strikeouts per 9 innings margin of 11.5 (ranked 47th nationally).
The first pitch is set to leave the mound at 7:30 to kick off game 1, 3:00 for game 2, and 1:00 to round out the series, all Eastern time. Will the Spartans get another series win over a top 10 opponent, or will the Longhorns take care of business at home? Tune in and find out!
