MSU Rugby Football Club embraces stereotypes and builds an inclusive team
When it comes to rugby — especially women’s rugby — many people are unaware of the sport. What they do know is often limited to popular stereotypes, including the assumption that LGBTQ+ athletes dominate it. Creative advertising junior Meryl Peterhans leans into these stereotypes as she runs the team’s social media. She plays a large part in fostering that sense of community awareness surrounding the team’s openness and inclusivity.“If I’m talking to anyone who’s like queer in any way, they’re like, ‘oh yeah, rugby, it’s gay,'” Peterhans said. “It’s a nice identifier, I don’t have to tell people I’m gay, but I play rugby, so they know what that means.” The club has embraced queerness for as long as current members can remember. In the past few years, it has evolved — renaming itself the Rugby Football Club rather than Women’s Rugby to represent better the makeup of the group, some of whom do not identify as female. Changes like these signal to the wider campus community the intention and ethos behind the club.
MSU gymnastics beats Maryland and Western Michigan in tri-meet win
No. 11 Michigan State gymnastics beat No. 24 Maryland and Western Michigan in a tri-meet at Jenison Fieldhouse. Spartan fans were treated to a special performance as the team celebrated National Girls and Women in Sports Day with its second-highest score of the season. MSU’s 197.250 was enough to beat Maryland’s 196.200 and Western Michigan’s 195.225. The Spartans needed a strong performance to stay competitive in the Big Ten, entering the match with a 2-2 record that left them in a five-way tie for fourth. The win improved their record to 4-4 overall and 3-2 in conference. MSU delivered on the occasion. It was a meet marked by season highs and clean performances all around. The Spartans blew their opponents away with their season-high floor score of 49.575 and high scores on both vault and bars. Junior MaKayla Tucker and senior Nikki Smith shared the All-Around title with scores of 39.500. Senior Sage Kellerman earned the bars title and shared the vault title with Smith. Tucker shared the beam title with Maryland’s Madeline Komoroski. The floor title was split between three Spartans — Smith, Tucker, and freshman Korynne Marquart — and Maryland’s Aine Reade. While these consistent star performers certainly brought the Spartans much of their score, head coach Mike Rowe emphasized how important the competition within his squad was in securing the victory.
Michigan sweeps MSU women’s basketball in commanding 86-65 victory
The stage was set for a memorable matchup. Two in-state rivals were looking to follow up a 94-91 overtime battle earlier in the season in just the second top 15 meeting between the programs. After the opening quarter, it appeared the rematch between No. 7 Michigan (21-4, 12-2 Big Ten) and No. 13 Michigan State (20-5, 9-5 Big Ten) would follow suit, shaping up as another back-and-forth duel. That narrative flipped quickly. A dominant second quarter fueled a Michigan blowout, as MSU fell 86-65 — its second straight loss by 20 points.
