Old equipment, maintenance issues nag IM East
As Michigan State University prepares to open its new Student Recreation and Wellness Center this spring — and potentially demolish the half-century-old IM West — students are growing frustrated with the state of another campus recreational facility. IM East, which first opened in 1989, serves as the primary recreational space for students living on the east side of campus. Despite its prominence in campus life, students told The State News that broken lockers, frequent machine breakdowns, outdated equipment, and overcrowding are regular occurrences at the facility. Human biology junior Carson Ferry, who works on the custodial staff, said employees frequently hear complaints about broken equipment and ongoing maintenance issues. “We hear complaints all the time, especially about broken cable machines and lockers,” Ferry said, nodding to a sign deterring people from using the right wall of broken lockers. “There’s not much we can do about it unless the university replaces the equipment,” Ferry added.
Sage Kellerman Big Ten Specialist of the Week
Michigan State senior gymnast Sage Kellerman was named Big Ten Specialist of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday afternoon. The honor followed her impressive performance in the Spartans’ road win over Michigan. Kellerman shared the weekly award with UCLA’s Ciena Alipio. The recognition is Kellerman’s first Specialist of the Week honor this season and the seventh of her career. It also marks Michigan State’s first Big Ten weekly award of 2026. The Croswell, Michigan, native played a vital role in Michigan State’s 197.525–197.425 victory over then-No. 10 Michigan on Feb. 1 at the Crisler Center. The win marked the Spartans’ highest team score of the season and their first Big Ten victory, making it a significant milestone early in conference play. Kellerman led both the vault and uneven bars lineups, helping Michigan State achieve season-high event totals of 49.425 on vault and 49.275 on bars. She recorded a season-high 9.975 on vault and tied her season-high with a 9.925 on bars, winning both event titles. Her performances were crucial in a meet that came down to the final rotation.
MSU prepares for top-25 clash against struggling Maryland squad
February is an important month for No. 12 Michigan State women’s basketball. With four of its seven games coming against ranked opponents — three of them at home — it is a stretch that will determine whether the Spartans are a true Big Ten contender. The second test comes three days after a 94-91 overtime loss to then-No. 9 Michigan, as MSU prepares to host No. 22 Maryland (17-6, 5-6 Big Ten) in East Lansing. It has not been an easy season for the Terrapins as of late. After entering conference play 12-0, Maryland has dropped six of its 11 Big Ten games and is riding a four-game losing streak. One of the key reasons behind those struggles has been injuries. Maryland currently has five players injured this season, as the injury bug has consistently plagued the team. Senior guard Kaylene Smikle and freshman guard Lea Bartelme have been two of the most significant losses.
