EAST LANSING– With other winter sports beginning, Michigan State has officially kicked off its wrestling season.
The Michigan State Open hosted 16 teams from across the country. All are battling for national glory. Led by captains Andy Hampton, Max Vanadia, and Kael Wisler, the Spartans looked to defend on their home grounds. The Jenison Field House was packed in as the action started at 9:30 a.m.. It was a test of endurance, performance, and will.
Represented Schools: Arizona State University, Central Michigan University, Davidson University, Edinboro University, Findlay University, Grand Valley State University, Indiana University, Kent State University, University of Michigan, Michigan State University, Northern Illinois University, Northwestern University, Ohio State University, Purdue University, Wisconsin University, and Unattached Wrestlers.
Action for the Spartans started in the Freshman 125-pound division. MSU’s Michael Esteban took on Edinboro University. Securing a commanding 13-2 victory over Austin Zimmerman, he rallied through the tournament. Both wrestlers pushed the pace, but Esteban had the advantage. A few rounds later, Edinboro’s #1 seed Chris Vargo avenged his teammate and took down MSU.
The Quarter and Semi-Final matches began, and many teams found their guys in the division finals. A notable matchup was in the 184-pound weight class. MSU’s Luke Vanadia faced University of Michigan’s Codei Khawaja in the final. In a decision victory, UofM wins this matchup and the 184-pound division.
Arizona State University claimed five first-place victories in the Freshman/Sophomore division.
While MSU did not take any division final victories, the Spartans still put on a good showing throughout the tournament. 14 MSU athletes achieved a podium finish.
MSU Wrestling will be going on the road next week. Making their way to Long Island University on Friday, Nov 14, the Spartans are planning to leave their mark on the mat.
