MSU announces metal detectors for Spartan Stadium

Michigan State University is introducing a new walk-through metal detector system at Spartan Stadium, the MSU Police and Public Safety office announced on Wednesday in a press release.

The metal detectors are part of MSU’s ongoing enhancement of the university’s safety and security portfolio.

When entering the stadium, guests will not be required to empty the contents of their pockets unless the metal detector alarms, in which case a security wand wil be used.

On top of Spartan Stadium and the already-existing metal detectors at the Breslin Center, new metal detectors are also being installed in the Wharton Center, Munn Ice Arena and MSU Tennis Center.

The metal detectors will be installed ahead of tomorrow’s football game against the University of Richmond.

FEMfest 2023 offers insight into the feminine experience through art

The MSU Union was filled with a flurry of emotions last Thursday, as Women*s Student Services–in collaboration with the University Activities Board, MSU Women*s Council and Impact 89FM–invited students to FEMfest 2023 in the Union Ballroom.

FEMfest is an annual celebration of women’s voices, featuring many musical and spoken-word performers from the East Lansing community. It provided a platform for people who have been historically silenced and encourages MSU students to empower themselves.

Attendees enjoyed 13 unique performances including readings of poetry, song covers, original music, dancing and a drag queen lip sync. Each performance presented a vastly different perspective and fostered a space for women to be heard.

Over the years that FEMfest has existed on MSU’s campus, it’s grown by a wide margin–in funding, attendance and experience. Overall, this year continued FEMfest’s legacy as an opportunity for women to express themselves in a safe and supportive environment.

Students discuss off-campus, on-campus jobs at MSU

Working a job in college is a great way to keep your pockets from emptying during the school year, but deciding whether to work through the university or through a local business can be daunting.

Opportunities in East Lansing do not fall short: MSU hires more than 17,000 students per year for a variety of different on-campus jobs and the city of East Lansing is filled with bars, restaurants, and local businesses that often look for students to take on part-time roles.

Creative advertising senior Jack Raymond works as a service center representative for residence halls in east campus.

Raymond said working through the university has been a great experience and his management is very understanding of the commitments he has as a student.

Raymond is in charge of working the front desk at dorms, where he processes packages and helps students out with questions they might have. He has been working the job since February and his favorite part is being able to talk with students.

Agribusiness junior Carter Pickering also works a job where he can interact with students, but in a much different setting than the dorms.

A bartender at Landshark, Pickering said his job doesn’t feel like work, but rather a hobby.

Having worked there for close to a year, Pickering said, his coworkers are great to work with and that his management is also understanding of his schedule and class work.

It is important as well for all students who have jobs throughout campus on top of all of their classes to have some balance and rest time in their schedules.
