Women’s Basketball Prepares for Face Off Against No. 3 Notre Dame

This Wednesday, the Spartans will welcome the Notre Dame Fighting Irish to the Breslin Center. Notre Dame is No. 3 in the nation and coming off of a dominating 105-51 victory over UMass Lowell.

Opinion: What Does the Victor Martinez Deal Mean Right Now?

The Detroit Tigers and All-Star switch-hitter Victor Martinez agreed to a four-year, $68 million deal that extends his contract through the 2018 season.

The 35-year-old is coming off of the best season of his career, where he posted a .335 batting average while belting 32 home runs and driving in 103 runs. Martinez’s 6.6% strikeout rate and .974 OPS were best in the majors and his 28 intentional walks led the league as well. His .409 on-base percentage was the best in the majors, his 57 multi-hit games was the third most in the AL, and he had the best strikeout-to-walk ratio out of any hitter. Read More…

Spartans Earn No. 3 Overall Seed in NCAA Tourney

An inconsistent Internet feed from NCAA.com made the room even more tense as the Spartans eagerly waited to see where they would end up in the NCAA Tournament.

All of a sudden the Internet feed came to and on the screen appeared a No. 3 seed for the Michigan State Spartans and the team got up out of their seats and cheered and congratulated each other on their hard work during the regular season. Read More…

Wrestling Soars at EMU Open

The Michigan State wrestling team went 2-1 at the Eastern Michigan Duals on Saturday in Ypsilanti. The Spartan squad defeated Kent State (32-7) and Olivet College (44-0) and lost the match to Chattanooga (24-13).

Nick McDiarmid (197) John Rizqallah (184) Roger Wildmo (157) and Javier Gasca (133) went 3-0 on the day, setting the bar for MSU. Read More…

Cross Country Runs a Straight Path to Nationals

Michigan State cross country carved a clear path to nationals this Friday at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional Championship at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. The women placed first and men second in their races to receive automatic bids to the NCAA National Cross Country Championship in Terre Haute, Indiana next week.

The No.1 ranked women ran to a first-place finish in the 6K race with 28 total points. This is the team’s sixth regional title. Read More…

Spartan Football Bounces Back at Maryland

COLLEGE PARK, MD. – Special teams and defense were key in No. 12 Michigan State’s road to a 37-15 victory over Maryland.

A rarity for this season, Connor Cook was unable to find the end zone for the entire game.  Cook had sixteen consecutive games with a touchdown pass until Saturday. Michael Geiger picked up the slack for Michigan State’s offense, making three out of four field goal attempts, all in the first half. Read More…

Men’s Swim and Dive Falls to Notre Dame

The MSU men’s swim and dive team was defeated by Notre Dame Friday night, 171-127.

The Fighting Irish started the night with a win in the 200 medley relay, and ended the night beating out the Spartan men in the 400 freestyle relay.

In between the first and last events, MSU swimmers had some strong performances that stood out to head coach Matt Gianiodis. Read More…

Men’s Hockey Drops Another Close Game

The Spartans closed out a rough non-conference schedule with a 3-2 loss to Boston College Friday night at Munn. Eight different Eagles registered a point and Thatcher Demko made 31 saves in the win for Boston College.

With Boston College coming into the game losing four of their last five, Michigan State needed to jump on the Eagles early, but the start did not go to plan. Read More…

COLLEGE PARK, MD. — Impact Sports has taken over Maryland! Spartan Red Zone host Dan Tyler and beat writer Bradley Allen recorded this week’s podcast live from the Day’s Inn College Park. Impact Izzone hosts Andrew Hayes and Blake Froling also made the trip from East Lansing to Maryland for an MSU sports-filled weekend.

Spartans Escape Navy

There was nothing pretty about it but Michigan State started the regular season off on the right foot with a 64-59 win over Navy.

The Spartans looked sluggish all game and struggled mightily to establish an inside presence. MSU had several runs in the first half but the lead never eclipsed eight points.

“We didn’t do the things we needed to do to be successful,” head coach Tom Izzo said.

Harvick Dominates in the Desert, Championship Four Field Set

It was no secret that Kevin Harvick was the clear favorite heading into last weekend’s Quicken Loans Race for Heroes 500 at Phoenix International Raceway. He had been the fastest driver all year, thanks to Rodney Childers and the whole No. 4 team at Stewart-Haas Racing. It was only a question of if he could deliver under the pressure in a literal “must-win” situation. He needed to win the race to clinch an automatic bid into the championship round, and he did exactly that – in dominating fashion.
